Liturgy Of The Hours

Recommended Posts

Does anyone pray the Liturgy of the Hours? If so, can you tell me where we are in the book, what week, etc? I stopped shortly after Christmas and would like to pick it up again, but alas, I don't have an Ordo so I'm not sure where I should start. If you know a good website that lists the pages for the day that would be great, too! Thanks in advance!!

aha, Didn't even think to the local cathedral gift shop. Beats paying $20 shipping and handling!

I've been praying the LOH since 1994.

Today is:
Fri. Friday Friday of the first week in Ordinary Time
All 786, Rd & Pr 69; NP 1285

Don't forget that we've moved back to Volume III. We are in Ordinary Time.

I've been praying LOTH ever since my parents bought me volume I two years ago. The rest of the family can't figure out why I like it so much, but I discover new depths in the psalms every year.

Good to know I'm on track.

I am curious about what other people do about optional memorials. When do you decide to pray the office of a saint with optional memorials? At one time I thought I'd try and do all of them, but other times I would simply only do the ones that were meaningful to me.

Additionally, when do you pray the office of the dead and who for? I've only ever prayed it on All Soul's Day.

When I was in the convent, the Sisters did it by year -- so for Year 1, they'd only do the regular days plus Feast Days, etc. that weren't optional, except they always did the Memorial of the Blessed Mother on Saturday. For Year 2, they'd do the first option, for example when you had to choose between St. Hedwig or St. Margaret Mary, they'd choose the first Saint listed for that year. For Year 3, they'd do the second option when you had a choice. And Year 4 they'd do the third option -- I don't think there are any more than that? Anyway, that's one way to do it.

We prayed the Office of the Dead whenever a Sisters' parent died, a benefactor died, or someone very close to the community died. I'm sure you could do it in honor of anyone who died. Also for the Pope, Bishop, etc. when that happened. We also did it certain set times during the year in honor of all the relatives, friends, and benefactors who had died.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I will tell my husband, he has an iPhone (that I often steal to use when he gets home from work, haha!)

Unfortunately there isn't a Catholic bookshop or Church giftshop nearby, and like someone else mentioned, I don't fancy paying $20 shipping for a $3 item!!!

Here's a Liturgical Calendar you can print out, fold up, (print it in the 'two-pages-per-sheet format and it will fit into a single A4 sheet) and tuck into your breviary, if you are not able to purchase one from a bookshop near you.

When I'm praying alone I stick to the ones that are meaningful to me. When I'm praying with others we pretty much skip them. The parish where I go to daily Mass purchased a number of copies of Shorter Christian Prayer. The books are inexpensive so it was easy for them to purchase a bunch, but the disadvantage is that they don't have many options in them. (But for me, the advantage of having a group to pray with outweighs any disadvantages with the particular version that's used.)

Another case where it makes a difference if I'm alone or in a group. In addition to All Soul's Day I pray the Office of the Dead on the anniversaries of my parents' deaths and whenever someone I know has died, either the day I learn of their death or the day of their funeral. It's a good way to recognize their deaths and pray for them.

Oh, I love my iBreviary! I'm pretty sure it's free, despite the "Pro" part of it's name, which usually suggests there's a free and paid version.
