Good Running Shoes

Hi.

I am going to run a marathon. I need a good pair of shoes; my current pair makes long distance running uncomfortable. Does anyone have any recommendations?

A lot depends on what kind of foot you have. I have a very narrow foot, and outrageously high arches, so Nikes work well for me. It could be that you just aren't wearing shoes compatible with your feet. Adidas and Reebok tend to be wider and lower arched than Nike. Look at the bottom of your old shoes. If you tend to wear out the outside of the sole first, you are an under pronater, like me. If you wear out the inner, you are an over pronater. If it is equal, your a neutral. Neutrals need stability shoes, Unders need cushioned shoes, and overs need control shoes. I would recommend going to a good running store or specialty shoe store, and have your arch tested. They can fit you properly as well. You may just not be wearing the right size.

Nike works well for me, I have a cheap pair that fits me well, but your local store can look at your feet and let you know which one is best for you. I do not think it depends on the brand at all. It's more about how your feet are shaped.

Good luck.

Nike, reebok, adidas are all garbage

The top marathoners in the world generally stick to Asics, Mizuno, and New Balance. "A good pair of running shoes" is not just any pair but a pair that fits your foot specifically.

Go to a store that specifies in running (not Foot Locker, or Wal Mart) that employs people who know what they're talking about. You can use google, but one of the best and most prevalent is Vertical Runner.

Have one of the store associates look at your gait, and your feet and they'll pull out a few pairs of shoes that should fit your type of foot and running style. Go from there.

I don't know where in the world you are, but Paragon Sports in NYC is the store for runners.

Look at their site and maybe it will guide you in a direction:

Good luck.

Most of the runners I know (who have done marathons or are daily runners) swear by Brooks.

That is interesting, serious runners around here love asics, and that is what I run in.

You definitely should go to a professional running store if you are going to run on a regular basis so you do not ruin your knees. I felt funny the first time I went and they were watching me walk, but now I love getting their advice. We have a place called Playmakers near us.

I know a few people who run "causally" that wear other brands, but all my hard core runner friends wear Brooks. These are people who run miles and miles every day, and are always training for marathons or races. It makes me tired just hearing them talk about it. They even have recommendations on what brand of socks you should wear (I'm not even kidding. I can't remember the brand but I could find out easily enough).

Personally, I love Saucony! and still wear them, though I am not a long distance runner anymore. They are the most comfortable/and the shoes I feel I can run the fastest in.

I second Brother Adam's advice though .. go to a professional running store so they can help you find the right pair, which is extremely important in avoiding injuries. I ran cross country and track in high school as well as extra races on the side (which I loved the most!), though I never made it to a marathon .. half-marathon though. But I really hurt my knees (didn't always wear saucony, btw) and was in physical therapy for a long while and my running "career" if that's the right word, had to come to an end .. But that was okay (though it took me some years to realize it) .. I won't be able to run long-distance as a cloistered nun, so God had other plans. Running used to be my life .. now prayer is

But anyway, running is awesome!! And I hope you find the right pair of shoes! :like:

p.s. you may want to research some common running injuries before you get started training to try to avoid them .. mine was/is ITBS and the cause was definitely overuse/plus my grandmother and father have particularly bad knees so I probably inherited that http://www.itbs.info/

I second Chiquitunga's recommendation. I'm lacing up my Sauconies right now for a run.

I wish I had these though --> http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/NIK1310/cmproductcrosssell/

I'd be all like pschewwwwwwwwww *rocket ship noise* Happy running :)

I have a pair of Saucony running shoes but I only run on the elliptical and don't consider myself a serious runner (hence no personal recommendation, just that from the serious people I know). Mostly I just run after kids. :P Actually, now that I think about it one of my Brooks-wearing-friends said her sister does a lot of races and wears them as well. I have a friend who did a couple races last year and she wore them, too (I just checked her FB pictures, I never really talk to her about running as she lives on the other side of the country... my local runner friends wear Brooks).
