Sarah147
This thread is turning out so totally cool. Is there a fantastic Italian-run Italian restaurant? I LOVEEEE their pizza and grinders, not Dominos or chains. How is it living near the Hanceville shrine, as far as community with Catholics, making friends, Italian restaurants, brand grocery store, CVS, Walmart, thrift stores, consignment stores, medical quality, gas station, good work, decent pricing to live/rent/own, etc. etc.? I complain about too cold and too hot. But when I stayed at Walt Disney World, the humidity and warmth in August didn't kill me. It wasn't as bad as I expected. The rains would come in quickly, and pass quickly; it felt like an amazon rain forest. How do you get around without a car? Is there a bus line? I mean, you got to get to the grocer, CVS, doctors, etc. Are the doctors in or near Ave Maria and Hanceville good? Really good, especially with hormonal testing?
There are lots of alligators in Ave.
How far from buildings and lawns? Do you ever see them? What kind of a problem have they posed thus far? Edited January 4, 2011 by JoyfulLife
BigJon16
Does anybody know what the university is like? I kind of have my heart set on Franciscan U, but relatives tell me I should look into some other places, just to be sure. --Big Jon
LadyOfSorrows
Missionseeker-- we should definitely get together! I'm in town until the 16th. I'm sure we must have bumped into each other. It's my retreat place when I want to get away from home I haven't seen an Italian restaurant in there...but...they do have a TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFE with lots of delicious smoothies and wraps and sandwiches. Very Floridian Ave Maria is still growing...I'm sure they'll be booming in about 10 years. It's a fantastic university! I've heard it compared more to Christendom than Franciscan, but I'm not sure. MissScripture
especially now. The houses were going for almost 200K now they're lucky to sell one for 110K. I live there and don't have a car, so I get to Naples, maybe once a month. Immokalee is close and has gas, produce for cheap (farmers' market) and any little items that you would need. The nearest walmart and target ARE in Naples, but Immokalee (maybe ten minutes away) has dollar stores, CVS, Walgreens, fast food and really good chinese and mexican and cuban and haitian food. There are lots of families with 6 or more kids who live there happily. My boss (5 kids) says it's a sometimes a sacrifice but really worth it.
You forgot Popeyes. They also have a Popeyes. You can't forget it! It's the first Popeyes I ever went to, and where I fell in love with their fluffy, buttery biscuit goodness!
There are lots of alligators in Ave.
I still look in the ditches for alligators, when I see water in ditches. So far, none have made it to ND, yet.
You could probably get from Hanceville, AL to Graceville, FL in only a few...if you're willing to settle for visiting Baptist College of Florida. I remember that year. We got the same four storms in the Jacksonville area. Florida is great if you like/love/can stand the heat and humidity for 8-9 months out of the year (I myself fall into the middle category). There is a big cultural divide somewhere around the middle of the state though...the northern half or so (and panhandle) are much closer to being Southern in culture, while the southern half of the state tends more towards being Yankee-aligned (as well as more strongly Hispanic). I'm not sure how Ave is, but being that it's a new community, my money would be on the latter.
I have a friend who goes to the law school and his wife works at a hospital in Naples. He said that it's very north-easterner in that area.
Missionseeker-- we should definitely get together! I'm in town until the 16th. Unfortunately I only see full houses for rent and not many part-time student type employment opportunities. But it'd be cool to visit one day. I've never lived near the shrine. I'm about four and half hours from it. But as far as I remember it's very difficult to find because it's back roads through an extremely rural part of alabama. I can't remember anything reallly near it. It's not so bad. you get used to it, I guess. I have friends with cars. There is a public transportation system, but I think it's an arrangement system. You call them they come. It's the county though. As far as doctors, I don't really know. I'm told there is a good female and Catholic OB/GYN in Naples, but idk. I see them. They rarely pose any problems. They usually stay in the water.
Does anybody know what the university is like? Also you can try in Immokalee or Naples (if you have a car) I know that my boss posts job listings on craigslist. I also know he's hiring (it's the cafeteria)

Totus Tuus
I live there. It's not really anything like Mother Angelica's shrine, it's kind of it's own little thing. Very small, lots of big families. We have a grocery store, bookstore (for the university), a homeschooling store (By Way of the Family) coffee shop, pub, smoothie place, and the university cafe and cafeteria, a prep school, university, golf cart store, ballet academy, and a few different neighborhoods. People come from all over to visit. Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland. It's pretty cool and it's 40 minutes from some of the world's best beaches, so even if you don't like Ave, you might still enjoy your visit. lol.
I lived in both communities (the Shrine in Alabama and the Ave campus) and another thing that distinguishes the two Catholic "bubbles" is that the Shrine is in the Bible belt, roughly 2% Catholic. Down in FL, being Catholic is not such an anomaly. So while Ave's definitely not just a normal city, it's not weird that it's Catholic.
Totus Tuus
And those of you who are looking for jobs at Ave right now... They are hard to come by, especially ones that support a family. But perseverance often proves worthwhile down here. Keep looking and applying.
