Hello,

I heard about this in the news some years ago. What's it like now? Is it anything like what Alabama has become since Mother Angelica's Shrine and EWTN? It's full of devout Catholics. Is the college anything like Franciscan University of Steubenville?

God bless you.

I live there. It's not really anything like Mother Angelica's shrine, it's kind of it's own little thing. Very small, lots of big families. We have a grocery store, bookstore (for the university), a homeschooling store (By Way of the Family) coffee shop, pub, smoothie place, and the university cafe and cafeteria, a prep school, university, golf cart store, ballet academy, and a few different neighborhoods. People come from all over to visit. Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland. It's pretty cool and it's 40 minutes from some of the world's best beaches, so even if you don't like Ave, you might still enjoy your visit. lol.

How'd that work? You or your family just wanted a strong Catholic community, so you up and moved?

Interesting. I was looking on maps.google.com and Alabama and Florida bump eachother in places. No wonder he chose such a nearby state, riding on the wave of Mother Angelica. I had thought Alabama was more in the center of the USA.

I have seriously considered moving to Alabama to be with the Shrine and the Faithful. By that I mean, down the road if Religious Life turned out not being my calling and my dearest loved ones passed on. I need that strong Catholic Community, like with loved ones or a convent. I wonder how much there is there though, like work, medical, shopping, schools, homes, apartment, etc.

I looked up maps.google.com for directions between Hanceville, Alabama and Ave Maria, Florida: it is just 13 hours!

Thanks. Missed that.

What's the weather like down in Ave Maria, throughout the year? Is there any risk of tornadoes, storms, etc.? What's the cost of living and gas prices?

It's southwest Florida, so (at least in the summer) there are a ton of thunderstorms and rainstorms (almost daily) but they only last a half an hour at most in general, (at least they did the summer I lived there). They can get hit with hurricanes and tropical storms, but at least the condos down there are built to withstand it.

Hurricanes and tropical storms? That part scares me. Eeek.

I *think* it's on the rare side, but the summer I was there, we got hit with a tropical storm. Looking back, it's hilarious how much we freaked out, actually...
