but I don't follow your hint....(message me maybe?)

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishermen
And he saith unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
This message was not intended for me, but I'm lost. Are you inviting TPO to go fishing? Are you suggesting that TPO might be one of the male members of the human species for whom females (fishers of men) might want to fish? (Not me--TPO is one of my Phatmass honorary nephews.)

As for the meaning of "Fishers of Men," I may be wrong, but I strongly suspect that that specific Bible verse is the source of the name of TPO's college household. Could be wrong, though. Maybe the guys in TPO's house are just totally klutzy fishermen who keep hitting each other with hooks instead of catching fish, so they put them all together so no one else would get fish hooks in uncomfortable parts of their anatomy.

I apologize for not knowing "what" about college Fraternities, sororities or I'm guessing what use people call "households" are? You see, I never attended college (Hence, my poor grammar); however my youngest "Gauvin" is a student at Stubie and will (at last) be graduating this year.

From what I understand Steubenville is one of the best real catholic colleges in the country. My son's major is "mental Health" and will be returning after winter break with his first car for some kind of internship.

It has been a long, long, long and expensive 4 years, but we (his mom and me) feel it was well worth the cost of admission.

PS: Gauvin, my son, explained what pencil-one's 'fisher of men" shirt in his icon pic is all about. i did not have a clue.

That's awesome! Tell Gauvin congratulations for me then! Or I might even see him on campus then haha.

My sister went to Stuebenville and graduated in Nursing, and I went out to visit her about once a semester. Yes, there's plenty of charismatic stuff there, but not like it was in the 80s. It's much more toned down, and could be avoided (more or less) if that was your preference (ie, don't go to FOPs when they have them once a month). If it bothers you, though, then it might be a challenge. But yes, many masses are available, and the Port has 24/7 Eucharistic Adoration. You'll find plenty of people who are excited about living out their Catholic faith. If it's too far away to go home for Easter, don't worry! The Easter liturgies there are great.

I think that the concept of a 'best' school is a misnomer. Best for what? You want one that will be a good fit for the student. FUS doesn't offer my major, so I never considered it (or any other Catholic school). I attended a state school, because my major was Chemical Engineering. My sisters went to CUA and FUS. One brother went to a state school, and the other to a small private school. So...my family was five kids, and we ended up at five different schools in five different states studying for five different majors. There are some families that send all their kids to one school (whether that be Penn State or FUS), and I've never really understood that. How could it be the 'best' for all of them?

Can it be argued that FUS has a 'better' campus culture than CUA if you're talking about Catholic orthodoxy? Sure. Because there are students at CUA who aren't there for the Catholic school side of things. They're there for sports or the major or because they wanted to go to school in DC. But they do have a top 10 nursing school, a school of engineering and architecture (both unusual for a Catholic college), and an English program that is unique (apart from Yale) on the east coast. If you were interested in studying drama or engineering, I would not recommend attending FUS, but I probably would encourage you to look at CUA.

FUS is expensive, and not nearly as generous with scholarships as some other private colleges. My sister's nursing degree from there was one of the more expensive ones in my family. Nurses are typically much better paid than youth ministers, though, so again, if someone was paying their own way through college, I might not recommend attending FUS to earn a degree to work in youth ministry....because of the debt you are stuck dealing with afterward. Also, like many liberal arts schools, the girl/guy ratio is about 3/1, and many of the guys are seminarians.

Every school has pluses and minuses. The goal is to figure out what you can deal with and what you can't, what you are trying to get out of college and what you are indifferent about. It seems as though the person who started this thread has already chosen Franciscan University, so I offer you my congratulations for getting in, and I wish you all the best for your time there. I hope it is an awesome opportunity for you to grow and learn. :)

Is there a comfortable place to catch a fish hook, barring, of course, dead cells?

Good point. I doubt there is a TOTALLY comfortable place to catch a fish hook. But, I suspect that it would be more uncomfortable in certain parts of the anatomy than others.

I've never been fishing--for fish OR men--so I can't speak from any personal experience.

Well, the heritage of the school is more or less charismatic, but that doesn't mean that those that are more traditional should be opposed to the school.

Oh and I heard Scott Hahn is a wonderful speaker, but horrible professor, but he piles on the work. : )
There are a ton of traditional Catholics at the school, and a majority of the professors are more or less traditional. There is no reason to feel uncomfortable on campus if you do not practice a charismatic spirituality. It is not as if they are not welcoming of all authentic Catholic spiritualities. The EF is celebrated on campus as well.

Dr. Hahn is not a horrible professor. I am in one of his classes now and have had him 2 other times before. He is a difficult professor, which makes him a good professor. It is not hard to get an A in his class though. If you go through any school just looking for easy A's, you will fail at your chosen profession. I would rather hire someone with a 3.0 GPA who took the hardest professors on campus, learned more than anyone else, and can succeed at their job better than the student with the the 4.0 who doesn't know their stuff.

Isn't there an issue about pollution though or the air not being up to par safety wise?
Well, there is smog and most of the time the air isn't as clean as always, but I mean it's no worse then any other big city.

your country is 80% catholic though. i'd say it's better to be in your country than in a single catholic university ;)
