TeresaBenedicta
I'm trying to put together a comprehensive reading/book list on evangelization in the modern world. From the philosophical underpinnings to this question (Catholic responses to modernity) to explicitly theological reflections on evangelization. Here's what I have so far: Archbishop Chaput- a few talks, articles, etc. "The Prince of this World & the Evangelization of Culture", "Glorify God by your life: Evangelization and the Renewal of the Liturgy", and a few others. Ratzinger is huge on this question. Introduction to Christianity, Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures, The Dialectics of Secularization: On Reason and Religion (although I haven't read this one, I'm assuming...), and pretty much the theme shows up in most of his writings. It's even present in his most recent "Christmas Message". Henri de Lubac's Drama of Atheist Humanism definitely deals with this question. Then we have Gaudium et Spes and Evangelii Nuntiandi, the latter I have not yet read. Charles Taylor has an interesting take that I'm not altogether fond of, but he does tackle the question. Alasdair MacIntyre also writes on this- After Virtue is the only work I've read of his, but I know he reforms his thought in later books. I'd assume that G.K. Chesterton and Cardinal Newman would be good thinkers to look into as well, although I haven't read much of either of them. Who am I missing? I know there are other thinkers out there. Most of those whom I have mentioned deal more specifically with the philosophical problems underlying evangelization in today's world. And how could I forget JPII?!!!! The one who called us to a "New Evangelization"!!! Edited December 23, 2010 by TeresaBenedicta
Brother Adam
Archbishop Sheen, Frank Sheed, there is a good book called Good News, Bad News by Ignatius Press. Also the great evangelistic saints. BTW, I wanted to say that I am very impressed with your intellect and work that you share with us here on phatmass. The way you carry yourself online is a fine example of evangelization in the modern world. I know that is a totally random compliment and all, but being in the same line of work and all, I know it helps to hear words of affirmation once in a while. And I'll definitely have to check out Sheen and Sheed. I've only read "Theology for Beginners" by Sheed and "Life of Christ" by Archbishop Sheen. Neither of which deal directly with Evangelization.
