kafka
first trailer of Terrence Malick's (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven, The New World) new sci-fi/fantasy/drama: Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain. Gave me goosebumps. oh my goodness this looks like it could be the best movie ever made. No exaggeration. some quotes from the trailer in the poetic voice overs (Malick loves to use) "There are two ways through life: the way of nature and the way of grace. . . " "Some day we'll fall down and weep, and we'll understand it all, all things. . ." "Guide us to the end of time. . . " "Unless you love, your life will flash by. . . " The cinematography looks absolutely stunning. I cannot wait until May 27th, 2011 too long Edited December 17, 2010 by kafka
kafka
here is the official plot synopsis. Potential spoilers for those who dont like to hear beforehand: "From the Desk of Terrence Malick..... We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the worlds way of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth. From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our worlds preparation, each thing appears a miracleprecious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life. The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the familyour first schoolthe only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover lifes single most important lesson, of unselfish love." The scenes depicting the birth and death of the universe I think will be weaved into the plot as thematic complementaries. He has done this before but only with nature on earth. One problem I think that is going to happen with this movie is that Malick makes works of art. He is a philosopher. His movies are like poems, meditations, etc. One has to go in with an attitude of participation. Fox will promote and market this movie. Some people will go to see it and might be disappointed because it is an unconventional movie. But others will love it and see something profound and beautiful. Semper Catholic
Terrence Malick movies, more effective then Ambien and with less side effects. I could barely make it through that trailer. (inb4 durr hurr go back to transformers and Avatar and splosions!) You can make arty deep movies interesting. Darren Aronofsky just got me to watch 2 hours of ballet in the Black Swan. kafka
Like I was implying, Malick appeals to certain type of people. To me it is very interesting on a deep level. I liked Aronofsky's "The Fountain" but I'm not going to see Black Swan. I saw the trailer several times and I could tell I would not like it, not because it is artistic (I've seen hundreds of art movies) but because of the apparent themes. nleyetn
I have not seen Black Swan, nor do I want to after reading about some content in it that sounded like it would be sinful to watch. I do believe though that Darren Aronofsky is a very effective director and knows how to grip an audience. After looking at Malick's filmography I realize that I haven't seen any of his films so I can't comment on his ability, but just seeing the trailer did not generate any interest in the movie for me.
I'd definitely recommend just about all of his films. They're not "great" as many critics believe them to be, but they're very good. They mostly suffer from being directed by Terrence Malick. He's a painter much more then he is a director. But still he's a pretty dang good painter. Thin Red Line was beautiful to, but he's probably the only director able to make a WWII movie boring.
kafka
I know some think Malick is boring, but I dont. There is one thrilling battle scenes in TRL, when they storm the hill. It just takes time to unfold, because he also focuses on the spiritual state of the commanders and soldiers. Oh well. He is really a sort of love/hate type movie-maker. I say movie-maker because yes he really isnt a director. And I agree Days of Heaven is his best, but I'm hoping Tree of Life will be better.
