Micah
For me at least, I relate the cord with the scapular, in which the cord is preferable and the chain acceptable. Also, a continuous cord is more reminiscent of the seamless garment of Jesus. But that's just personal preference; I'm sure most people wouldn't even care. Ed Normile
is there a difference between a cord and a chord? hmm Anyway I haven't worn my medal yet.. Got to ask a priest to bless it first, and it's on a chain.
Yes, a chord is a musical notation and a cord is a small rope or heavy string. ed
IgnatiusofLoyola
A month or so ago, I saw on the Internet that the Association of the Miraculous Medal (the Vincentians) were offering a free Miraculous Medal. No donation was required (I didn't feel pressured to donate), but obviously, donations were accepted. Since the Vincentians are a respected religious Order, it didn't seem that they would lie about the Miraculous Medal actually being blessed, and the "blessing" woiuld not be "taken away" by paying for the blessed object. So, I ordered a medal, and have been wearing it every day 24/7 ever since (except when bathing). It is a nice silver-colored medal, obviously not fancy, but not "cheap-looking," either. The medal is oval, roughly an inch long. I wear it on a very plain chain. The chain is silver-colored, but is obviously not real silver, so does not look ostentatious in any way. The cord is fairly long so I doubt anyone would ever notice it unless they were looking for it. I don't know enough about the issue of a cord versus a chain to have an opinion. To me, it seemed more "like me" to wear a chain, because a cord seems more masculine. (Although the cord I have is one that would be appropriate for either gender--it's a pretty sturdy, heavy cord, with no clasp to break.) I don't feel comfortable wearing a scapular, because it seems there are expectations that go along with wearing a scapular (such as saying the Rosary on a regular basis--correct me if I have this wrong) that I couldn't promise to fulfill. I have no problem with saying the Rosary, but I can barely say a "Hail Mary" from memory it's so new to me, and I couldn't in good conscience promise to say a full Rosary on a regular basis. Also, it seemed as if you needed to be "enrolled" to wear a scapular. Apparently any priest can do this (and any priest can bless a Miraculous Medal), but since I'm not Catholic, I don't feel comfortable asking a priest I don't know to do this. That's why I took the Vincentians up on the Internet offer of a free Miraculous Medal already blessed. I think an earlier post already gave the Web site of the Assocation of the Miraculous Medal, but it's http://www.amm.org/ Note: I trusted this site and this offer as legitimate, but if there is any reason to believe it is not, will someone speak up? Thanks! Edited January 1, 2011 by IgnatiusofLoyola
ThePenciledOne
I have a few different medals on a cord for myself. I just like the cord, because to me its more natural for my tastes, chains don't appear comfortable to me at all. And I can always make a new cord if mine snaps, which it has already a couple times, but no biggie cause I just fix it. That would be my small opinion thus haha. AudreyGrace
If possible, I would attach mine to my scapular (which is a cord). It bothers me when I have a chain on. It's the whole two-necklace uncomfortable feeling. Hmm. I think I'll try attaching mine on tonight.. haha. My mom's a little more free spirited... she has the Miraculous Medal tattooed on her. I was present when she got it.. definite role reversal- the teen going with her mom so her mom can get a tattoo. lol.

Guest SOM
i dont know where you got the meaning of the chord to be siimplicity. i have heard of the chain from True Devotion to Mary by Saint Louis DeMonfort. pretty awesome stuff. i incredibly reccomend that book. if you are you know you wear a chain for a specific reason but it could be worn on different places like the ankle or wrist. from what i remember of the story of the miraculous medal it was reccomended to wear around the neck. so if somone wears a chord and a chain in order to have the medal around the neck they have both slavery and simplicity? thats awesome! if only it was as simple as putting on a chain.. gosh i think it might be easier if we trust in the intercession of our Blesed Mother.
Chain symbolizes SLAVERY, while cord means SIMPLICITY. Any comments? Suggestions? Dara
I wear two Miraculous Medals, one on a chain around my neck and one on my (blessed) rosary bracelet. I had never considered wearing it on a chord, but I actually really like the idea!
