Creating A Website

Anyone know how I can go about creating a website? How much it costs, what I need, etc. I really have no idea how it works. I know you need to buy a domain name, but other than that I don't know what's needed.

You need a domain and hosting, most likely they're sold in combination. As far as the website, it depends how elaborate you want to get. You could just start a blog and publish it to your domain name. If that's all you want though, you might as well just get a free blog and forget buying a domain (unless you think it will drive up traffic).

No, it's not a personal blog. It's an entire website. But for now the most important part of it will be the forum (no, I'm not creating a website to rival Phatmass. It's not a Catholic-related website). Throw out a number, just so I have an idea how much it might cost.

So you want users, then?

If you want to host it yourself, you need a machine and a constant internet connection - with a static IP - could be hundreds of dollars to set up and an extra $50 monthly for upgraded internet service, if you use free and open source software, like PHP (which dUST uses).

If you want someone else to host it, you're looking at $20-$30 monthly overall for the service, and this number can change dramatically depending on what exactly you're looking for. Could end up being $100 monthly. Could also be $5 monthly if you don't need a database to store info.

If you want proprietary software (Microsoft, Coldfusion, etc...) you're looking at thousands of dollars for initial set up (if you want to host yourself).

CORRECTION: Actually, it looks like $5/month can get you hooked up with a database, also. Most places, though, will charge you up front ($5/month for 1 year...).

Cost depends on the traffic you get. You pay for certain bandwidth levels, so you can start small and see where it goes. I had good service from this place back when I had a domain:
http://www.siteground.com/

Looks like they are starting at $4 a month.

Cool thanks. How much does the actual design of a site cost? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something easy to navigate and easy on the eyes.

Yeah, part of the website is going to be a document library, so I'll need space to store the documents. But documents are relatively small so I don't think they'll take up tremendous space.

Hmmm... I don't know for sure, I always made my own. You can probably buy a design cheap somewhere online (if you can edit it yourself), but if you want someone to build a whole site for you from scratch they usually charge a lot more.

Actually, documents are much larger than other forms of data saved in a database. You could save them in binary format in the database, or have a folder/file system which keeps the files. I'm honestly not sure which option would have the least amount of overhead (in size).

As far as the cost to actually design a site - that really depends, too. I'm not completely sure how much a good design would cost - I do it myself, and I'm in a company where I don't know how much my labor costs to the customer. For professional work, though, you might expect $70-$100 hourly. You could put the job up on a freelance site, and have someone in India do it for as little as $10/hour, but everything I've read and heard about going this route would make me rethink it. If you go with the higher cost freelance people, closer to $50/hour, you'll get a better job, you'll be able to understand the designer, and the code will be easier to work with for the next person who needs to look at it.

Ah - gotta go finish up the semester!
