Gift Ideas

So, I have 2 sister-in-laws who are teenage girls and I have NO idea what to get them for Christmas. Their mother is not really much help, because she doesn't always quite understand the constraints we have (financial, we're flying so it has to be okay on an airplane, etc). Any thoughts on what they might like? The one girl is really into anime, she likes writing and likes reading and history. The other girl is in JROTC and LOVES that, she also enjoys video games and reading and skateboarding. They're both into vampires and ghosts and that sort of thing. They're technically being raised Catholic, but neither one shows much of a deep interest in it.Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

Yeah, but I was trying to stay away from that idea, because I feel those sorts of gifts lack any meaning and indicate a lack of connection with the person...

Ouch! Not necessarily - i think it depends on the gift card and the recipient. :)

Yeah, that's true. I wouldn't feel bad about giving my brother a gift card to a place he likes to eat or something like that. But to just give a generic one --like to Target or something I feel kind of lacks connection, unless the person is working towards a specific large item or something. ETA: Particularly when that's all you ever get the person.

Hinter dem Horizont

Make-up, posters of things they enjoy, CD's, fashionable scarves and hats for the winter if they live somewhere that gets cold, t shirts et cetera are always perfect gifts

see I know people say no gift cards... but I like them!

They can be thoughtful if you think what the person likes but don't know specifically what they like...

2 examples... I think itunes gift cards are great if someone is in to music (perhaps teenage girls??) itunes gift cards let the person pick out the songs they want, they're not just stuck with one CD with 2 good songs and 8 ok ones, and it shows you know they like music.

Second, this may seem lame to some... but... my wife loves to shop (what woman doesn't). When my mom asks me what my wife wants for Christmas I sometimes tell her gift cards to her favorite stores. Why? 3 reasons - buying clothes for soemone is extremely risky, maybe they don't like it, it doesn't fit right, ect. 2 - My wife doesn't want any one thing in particular, but would rather pick something out... 3 probably the biggest reason... my wife loves the "experience" of shopping, looking through the clothes, going to the mall ect. We live on a tight budget, trying to save for a house, ect. and so when she gets a chance to say "heres $50-$100 to spend on whatever you want at your favorite store" it truly is a gift she really likes.

[s]for anime girl how about a fancy journal and pen or a gift card to barnes & noble or manga if you know which ones she likes. for vampire girl how about some stuff related to the twilight movies or season one of true blood. and most teenage girls love getting things of makeup, nail polish, little vials of perfume, earrings, etc[/s]

oops just saw that you figured it out.
