rachael
is the brown-ness of the apple really that serious that we have to mess with genetics?

Ed Normile
I guess that even though it does not spoil they checked it out and discerned that it would digest properly? I wonder if this type of product could have some side effects, say ten years down the line the realize it causes some undesirable side effects, or perhaps it could be like those sugar alcohols that mimic sugar while not dissolving which allow them to be no fat yet cause digestive gases and diarrhea in some people. That would be better than others that cause things like cancerous tumors in certain subjects. I am of the opinion that God created apples and in his wisdom thought they were the bees knees, why mess with God's creation people. ed
No, I doubt it, what principle would this be based off of? Isnt just a chemical reaction with the air? I mean an apple is meant to be eaten whole, not sliced and preserved in a bag for weeks. Another thing these companies could do who sell sliced apples in bags is sprinkle them with lemon juice, this blocks browning. But then they would have to spend money on lemons. Why not just sell whole apples people? Preferably organic. Edited December 1, 2010 by kafka

kafka
Wasn't nature affected by the fall? Who knows, maybe apples didn't brown and spoil in the garden?
In general certainly, the entire cosmos are affected by Adam's sin, and God's profound and just perpetual punishment. In terms of particulars this difficult to say. We're not sure if there were apples in Paradise. But anything is possible with God. Perhaps God triggered different genes after the Fall. rachael
Isn't that the purpose behind selective breeding? This is just a shortcut
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. Transgenic organisms, a subset of GMOs, are organisms which have inserted DNA that originated in a different species.
