kafka
Based on a true story. *A couple of spoilers in analysis* "A mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive." starring James Franco. Directed by Danny Boyle who did Slumdog Millonaire, 28 Days Later and Sunshine. just saw it. It was awesome awesome awesome, especially if you like outdoors stuff and extreme situations. From a spiritual standpoint there were some profound moments. At one point he realizes that the reason he gets stuck and no one is there to help is in large part because of his selfish life. At one point when he is feeling really down, he is tempted to masterbate, but he decides against it. He acknowledges Divine Providence at least implicitly admitting that the rock he gets stuck under was ordained from the beginning of time to teach him a lesson. He also has a premonition, depicted as a vision, that he would one day be a father and this sparks his last desperate attempt to save his life. He thanks God after he is released from the rock. I'm not sure if some of this was added in by the director or truly happened, but it was interesting. Even though he doesnt have a refined understanding of God, he is still engaged in moral acts ordered toward God implicitly, repentance, love of neighbor and self, belief in Divine Providence, etc. Also some good acting. Very engaging. So overall it was a good movie. Edited November 25, 2010 by kafka
Semper Catholic
Pretty well known story from a few years back, google Aron Ralston if you've been living in a cave for that long. Getting tons of Oscar buz (Danny Boyle coming off BP and Best director for Slumdog). Looks like it will be a breakout role for James Franco (i.e. him getting oscar caliber roles). Definitely excited to see this, from the trailer alone looks like amazing cinematography as usual from Boyle.
kafka
Boyle can make a good movie. I love 28 Days Later. Very striking and memorable, been one of my favorites since I first saw it. Havent seen Slumdog yet.

Boyle was the executive producer. It stars Jeremy Renner (from the Hurt Locker) and Rose Byrne. I thought 28 days was a little bit lacking in action (personal preference more then anything) but 28 weeks more then makes up for it. The opening scene in 28 weeks is one of the greatest horror scenes in film history IMO. Here's the link: http://vimeo.com/8597539
kafka
I have not yet. Maybe I will next week. I like Rose Byrne. Easy on the eyes. I agree there is a lack of action in 28 Days Later, and it is personal preference. What I loved about it is it seemed to capture a genuine sense of the apocalypse, like how it would really be. And the experiences and range of emotions in the characters from beginning to end was wonderful. It is much more than a Zombie movie.
