TeresaBenedicta
I'm looking for a nice Christmas dress. One that is modest, not too expensive, but nice. Any suggestions as to where to look?

Lilllabettt
Shabby Apple --- they are having a sale!!! Also Modcloth has retro-inspired things. If you click on "dresses" and then "longer lengths" they have some cute, young, modest items. MithLuin
If you can find somewhere that is selling them at a discount, you might want to try antrhopologie. The prices are through the roof, but some of them have very nice cuts (not all are modest, but you should be able to find good ones). As always, you'll have to watch for length, clingy material, partially see-through, no slips.....I'm not suggesting that all of their stuff is modest! For affordable clothes, try Filene's Basement or Nordstrom Rack. You'll have to hunt for the modest ones there, of course!
MithLuin
Oh, and I forgot to mention that ebay lets you search dresses by length and sleeve type, so you can start with more modest selections there (calf or full length, kimono 3/4 or long sleeves) and see what comes up in your size/price range. MithLuin
And if you like hippie/peasant blouse/gypsy/flowy stuff, you might want to check out: Holy Clothing They have to ship it to you from India, so pay attention to the shipping charges when looking at the prices. Most of their stuff is quite modest (high cut bodice, long dresses, flowy rather than form-fitting), but they do use some sheer fabrics, so not everything is modest. And some of it looks like you should be walking around a RenFest

Sarah147
Sometimes you can find really great clothes at certain thrift stores. I love them. And I LOVE www.DressBarn.com Sometimes there is good clothing in department stores, too. I figure my Christian/non-Jewish/Non-Muslim friends would look at me weird.

MithLuin
If you are having difficulty, remember layering! Camis and stockings don't fix everything, but they can help. And a shrug or bolero can cover up shoulders if the straps of a dress are too skimpy. Like so: Belk - dress + bolero for under $
