Semper Catholic
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that a 19-year-old woman died of an apparent suicide nine days after telling University of Notre Dame police that she had been sexually attacked by a football player in a dorm room. Elizabeth "Lizzy" Seeberg, a freshman at neighboring St. Mary's College who had battled depression, apparently overdosed on prescription medication in her own room during the third week of classes in September. The player, meanwhile, has remained on the field. The Tribune did not name the player because he has not been charged.
what would you have them do? yell at them for having unmarried sex? because unless the guy has been charged that's all it comes down to, unfortunately. I know what the football player will say: " Freshman have trouble adjusting. She had depression. We had a little fun, she took it too serious, got her heart broke, The End." And if I remember your previous posts correctly, you don't have a problem with unwed sex so .... ? What would you have them do? What 'wrong' should they right here? Me, I have a problem with unwed sex. I would tell football guy:" that is not acceptable behavior at a Catholic school, even if its "just sex." It doesn't matter if you're charged or not, because its still wrong, whether its consensual or not. So Good bye." But that kind of punishment fits into my moral schema. I'm wondering how it would fit into yours.

I don't think that really makes a difference, though. I'm just picky. Just so you know, the university, the football program, and head coach Brian Kelly himself are not going without consequence over Declan Sullivan's death. I go to school across the street, and students from my school are able to participate in everything but athletics over there, so I hear a lot of what's going on. There have been numerous calls for BK to resign and for the football program and the schools administration to be reevaluated. I, for one, would love to get one of the more conservative CSC priests in over there.
No. That's not the point. The point is, Semper is making like he's all offended and thinking that Notre Dame should DO something. When in his view, nothing "punishable" has been proven to have happened here. What's proven is that a girl committed suicide after having pre-marital sex with a football player. That's it. Pre-marital sex. Semper has no problem with what's been proven. So I would think that he wouldn't demand any punishment for the person involved, nor would he be indignant at the failure to punish. Semper Catholic
What's been "proven" is unlikely what really happened. Ben Roethlisberger wasn't charged with sexual assault either. Truth is that if a young lady is intoxicated when an event occurs the possibility of a conviction is slim to none. I just know that there aren't a whole lot of girls who kill themselves over having consensual sex. What should have happened is that the player should not have been on the team while the investigation was occurring. If he's cleared of all charges then let him back on. As it was, I doubt player X's loss would make a significant impact on a football that isn't even bowl eligible yet. Further, ND football has always prided itself on going after student-athletes who are "more then just football players." Apparently this mantra has been pushed to the side in order for them to win more football games.

The story says Seeberg told dorm mates about the incident upon returning to St. Mary's campus and reported the incident to Notre Dame police at 5 p.m. the following day. It also says a law enforcement record shows she received assistance from Belles Against Violence, a St. Mary's program that helps victims of sex crimes. It also says she was interviewed by Notre Dame police about the alleged attack.
Clearly it was consensual.

A significant trauma on top of clinical depression would be enough to send a person over the edge. Especially when she realized that her attacker would not be charged.
