Dear Hasan, tried to message you but Phatmass would not permit it. So this message must be publicly aired on your Open Mic thread.
One of the other Phatmassers (notardillacid??) remarked that you were acquainted with Our Lady of Sorrows convent of cloistered Passionist nuns, in suburban Pittsburgh. Is this true?
Our Lady of Sorrows just celebrated their centennial this past July and there were Vocation Station threads on the subject.
Or, is it only the Pittsburgh monastery of Passionist fathers/brothers with which you are familiar? Many thanks.

Hey sisterintigo. I'm familiar with both. I stayed for a week at the monastery every summer (except one) from 8th grade through high school with other teens from my parish. Every summer we stayed at the monastery we did manual labor for the convent. One of the adults has an aunt in the order and therefore we were allowed to visit within the convent. We even spilled black pain on their driveway. That's awesome that they celebrated their centennial. In my experience they are truly wonderful women.

Here are some photos of Pittsburgh Passionist Fathers visiting the nuns at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent. Do you know any of these men?

Ha, yeah. I meant to say 'paint'. :P

A lot of the Nuns look familiar. Some of the Priests look familiar, but I don't think I've really met any of them. I know Fr Joe, Fr. Pat, Fr Patrick, Fr Alban, Fr Bill, Fr Justin and probably a few more who I'm not thinking of at the moment. Sorry, it's finals time and I'm sleep deprived.

Your point in that thread is correct. The nuns are cloistered. I usually call them a convent so as not to cause confusion. A few memories there stand out. Here is one. The nuns are very strict in their piety. One of the only movies they own is Passion of the Christ and they wake up all through the night to do penance and pray. But they are still very kind. One year, we were fixing up their cemetery. One of the older girls was repainting a statue of Christ (standing with his arms outstretched). She was getting the top part and couldn't hold the paint bucket so she looped the handle around the arm of Jesus so she could reach it while she painted (so it looked almost like the statue was holding the paint bucket). She saw the Mother Superior walking into the area and suddenly panicked. As she put it, "I realized, oh my God, this must look so disrespectful. She's going to ask me to leave and not come back". Instead, the old Nun just looked at the scene, smiled, and said, "Well...look at that. She's helping Jesus and Jesus is helping her", then she laughed and moved on.

It is interesting to see them interact with the Passionist priests. They are kind of cut off from the outside world so sometimes news comes to them slow. I just remember one of the senior Nuns and Fr. Pat talking about the state of the underground Church in China. I guess the Passionists have Missionaries there. I know they used to because they have the bodies of some Monks who were imprisoned by the Communists after the revolution when they first came to power.
