Theoketos
There are three types of modesty 1) Concealing physical sexaul value (Applies more often to women) 2) Concealing interior reactions to physical (Applies more often men) 3) Inspiring Love through both actions and dress, and transforming our hearts. Carrie
once again, critisized for not being 100% specific in my explanation, assuming people could think for themselves. this site doesn't show much compassion in it's debates... goodbye
No one is criticizing you. We all have differing opinions regarding this topic, so we're not necessarily going to agree with everything you say. Hence, what makes it a debate. Stick around...debate some more. I know you'll take this as criticism, too, but please understand that it is meant to be constructive criticism. This is a forum, you really DO have to be 100% specific if you want to be sure people understand exactly where you are coming from. When we're not talking face to face its easy to misunderstand the way written words are meant, especially in a debate. God Bless, and I hope you stick around! master_alterserver
Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. We do not own ourselves. To be naked causes lust. It doesn't matter if you are at a place that allows it. Jesus was pure, that is not following His example of purity! Dressing for Holy Mass well I will say it is not a beach party and modesty is most appropriate. At the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Alabama they had dress rules! I say Amen to that. God Bless Jason
It does not always cause lust. The more you see of the body, the less you see of the person, which can CAUSE lust. MrsFrozen
i think we have a distorted view of the body but not because we want to cover them up! i heard of a study done awhile ago on teenage girls in the u.s. and muslim girls in a country (can't remember which) where women's magazines were banned. the muslim girls, even though they would be considered by americans as repressed and taught that bodies were shameful, had better body image and loved their bodies more than the americans. i think that says something.
I hear you!!! I speak from personal experience. Before I became a serious Catholic, I had subscriptions to Cosmopolitan and Glamour magazines. Looking at the size 0 girls in those magazines made me HATE my body because I was not that size. I am a typical size 12 (and ALMOST back to it from my pregnancy--YEAH!!!) and I spent years hating it. I had serious eating disorders, all for vanity, all trying to get to a size 0--which will never be possible for me. I havn't read those magazines for months now, and now I am happy with a 12. My husband finds my more attractive now that I have let that go and have a better opinion of myself. Just one of the many reasons those magazines are intrinsically evil! God bless! MrsFrozen
The Church has stated that women must cover at least to the elbow. The shirt cannot be any deeper than two fingers breadth from the pit of the throat. Dresses should not merely fall "scarcely below the knee" (in all positions)
Wow, I've never heard of this! Are you sure that's not outdated?
MrsFrozen
i've always wondered, why do so many catholic girls' schools require knee-length skirts (they can be rolled up higher, too) when those can be quite immodest (think of how the 'catholic school girl' outfit is now sexified, esp. by britney spears)? wouldn't it be better to just have the girls wear ugly pants?
I went to a Catholic school, and our skirts were allowed to be above the knee. Yes, the outfits have been "sexified" and I used to get comments from some non-Catholic public school kids about my outfit. The uniform isn't meant to be sexy--the secular world has given it that image.
MrsFrozen
Anything can be immodest. Someone can be in jeans in a t-shirt and be immodest, if their intent is to cause lust.
MrsFrozen
you know what makes me mad about reading this thread? that there is a general feeling in arguments about how it is "the woman's fault." "the woman's responsibility." Do we really want to go back to the time where the woman was the sinner, the lustful one, the tempter, etc and the man was blameless? Where the woman has all the responsibility and the man has none? Give me a break. CreepyCrawler, "I would like to add that a 'hot chest' and 'tight abs' are becoming more sexualized in men and so I'd please ask you men out there to take your own advice and cover up (no shirts off in the summer!) -- better safe than sorry and causing someone else to sin!! " I totally agree. Come on, let's make this equal. And btw, it gets pretty hot here in the summer too, and I'll wear sleeveless tops and shorts.
I agree, Lil.
