Fight Club

Has anyone seen the movie "Fight Club"? I was 13 or 14 when that movie was in theaters. I had no idea what it was about when I first saw it. I just thought it was a movie about people who liked to fight. Now I'm 25 and the movie makes a lot more sense. What's your opinion of the movie.

There's a line from the movie, "We're a generation of men raised by women." When you're 13 a line like that goes over your head. When you're 25 it doesn't.

It means that "Fight Club" is not just about people who like to fight.

I've never seen Fight Club and never will because I just can't watch movies with violence and/or suffering. I can't watch a movie and then walk out and say "It's just a movie"--I get emotionally involved. It means I've missed a lot of great movies (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, to name two of many), but that's just the way I am. But, I was sorry to miss Fight Club because I happen to think that Edward Norton is one of the most gifted actors ever--far more gifted than Brad Pitt.

As for the line, "We're a generation of men raised by women"--hasn't that always been true throughout history? It's only in very recent years that men took part in child-raising. Men in poor families had to work so hard to keep food on the table that there wasn't any time left for child-raising. And, rich people had their children raised by nannies--although they then sent their male children to all-male boarding schools, so, for better or worse, maybe those boys weren't raised totally by women. And, many generations lost hundreds of thousands (millions?) of men in war, so it was left to the widow to raise the children.

But, obviously the line means something to you. Clearly I'm missing something--probably because I'm not a man. I'd be interested to hear your "take" on what it means.

I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.

(More later...)

I'm disappointed that you caught my "Fight Club" reference but not my "Full Metal Jacket" reference.
