But I do think the practice of medicine is relevant to this kind of subject. In my mind when we have a nation that proudly advances the right to die but not a right to care, it just strikes me odd.
Step one: Freak out Step two: Claim freakout was not serious. MithLuin
Back on topic, a DNR is fine, if you don't do anything to actively kill the patient. A person who has signed a DNR likely has a chronic mortal condition, and would like to know that they aren't going to be rushed to the ER and shocked and prodded back to life 5 times before finally succumbing to their incurable illness. Not everyone wants a DNR - some would like to fight it out til the end. And some people would much rather die at home than at the hospital, so hospice arrangements are in order. There are lots of end of life decisions to be made, and it's a good idea to talk about such things with your loved ones and to make sure you have some understanding of what is or is not ethical before signing things. We are all going to die someday, and we have every right to request that people at the hospital don't call a code on us. During a code, your clothes are ripped off, needles are jabbed into you, your heart is shocked (and maybe someone even climbs on top of you to administer CPR), and there are all these frantic people and noise. If you have a DNR, when you code, those who have gathered to be with you in your final moments....just watch. It's a lot more peaceful. Not everyone should have a DNR - if you aren't dying, you'd want someone to revive you if you have a heart attack. But for people who watch Return of the Jedi and get mad at Luke for just sitting there watching Yoda die...what was he supposed to do, exactly? The Jedi was 900 years old, and clearly only holding his body together through sheer force of will. CPR isn't the best answer in a case like that - comforting the dying (and the grieving) is more important. It's tough to watch a patient die, I'm sure, so I can understand hospitals not always being eager to honor DNR requests, but...they aren't immoral. dominicansoul
at the rest home I used to work in, DNR's were actively discussed with the resident's. they weren't dying...they were just old...

Mr.Cat
CPR is brutal.
I am going to agree, when the Boy Scouts taught me CPR they explained if your doing chest compressions correctly, you WILL be breaking ribs. Because the ribs are setup in such a way to PROTECT the heart from chest compressions. The idea is that its better to have a few broken ribs than be dead. So yeah, brutal.
