tnavarro61
Our immigration papers are being prepared, and our father said we would be moving to the United States by next year. Although this is not yet sure (but I am very eager for it, please pray for us. May Go'ds will be done.) I am asking for some help. My mother who is already in USA is in CA, so we might be settling them. We might get work there. So my question is, what is the American work culture? Would units in college help (I have units in industrial psychology and legal management)? What kinds of jobs should i expect? I am ready to do menial jobs, janitorial jobs, as a cashier like Squidward (but not in fast foods! I am clumsy unfortunately). Also i am discerning religious life, that's why I really need to work to support my vocation. is it easy to travel, eg from California to Texas; or CA to NE? How do Americans travel? Going to a place of different culture is very exciting but very haunting. God bless you! BTW, anyone from CA, especially in the Oakland area? krissylou
I'm not sure what you mean by "is it easy to travel" from one part of the USA to another. There is no bureaucracy involved in crossing state borders. You don't need to have papers or go through checkpoints or anything. You just go. There will probably be a sign on the highway saying "you are now entering Nebraska" or whatever state it is, but that's it. Your immigration status will be utterly irrelevant. Travel is frequent and common. Travelling long distances can be expensive, though. Generally when people are travelling long distances they either drive or take airplanes. Hinter dem Horizont
It is easy to travel in the USA. Everything is connected by highways. Or you could travel by plane. Contemplative orders in the USA that are not necessarily monastic include: CANONS OF THE NEW JERUSALEM http://www.canonsregular.com/ FRANCISCANS OF THE IMMACULATE http://marymediatrix.com/
how expensive could it be? are people open to entertaining questions especially about directions? How about from California to Texas, is it that hard to travel alone without an owned vehicle? Are taxi rates high? I plan, when I get there, to go to the Carmelite hermits in Texas. Jus curious. SoonerCatholic
Driving distance from California to Texas is about 1600 miles depending on where in California you leave from and where in Texas you are going to. I don't think any taxis in your area would go that far. If you don't have a car and you don't want to or can't afford to fly, you might look into taking a bus, like Greyhound (https://www.greyhound.com/default.aspx). It's hard to travel if you don't have your own car, but it's not impossible. I hope your experience here is a good one.

CatherineM
Just be careful of some of the churches in California. They can be very progressive to the point they no longer look Catholic.
the_rev
You could always try Amtrak. It is funded by the government and it loses money for the government each year!

TeresaBenedicta
Oh, you'll be able to tell if a local parish is... progressive... or not. The structure of the building itself might be a hint (although not always). Let's just say there are a lot of parishes out West, sadly. But there are good ones too. Chiquitunga
Oakland, CA - Christoval, TX (where the hermits are) on Greyhound is a little over 50 hours altogether .. I've been on a 17 hour bus ride and it was not fun .. to say the least. I would not recommend it to anyone ..
thank you very much, i'll look at their site. I'll be also looking at Armtrak.. sounds liike I'm gonna ride truck in there.
I was going to suggest Amtrak too .. but then that's pretty long and a bit complicated also. The closest station to Christoval is Del Rio, TX (about 2.5 hours away) You have to catch the train in Los Angelos to there, and it's a 25 hour trip. I have been on a couple long distance Amtrak trips in the West though, and it is a great way to see the country But be prepared for a long trip .. And also, it depends on the person, but I have never been able to really sleep on an overnight train ride .. even when I spoiled myself once and got a roomette (but not a suite .. could never afford that!) I still couldn't sleep on the bed in the roomette. It was too bumpy But anyway, so if you type in Oakland, CA (Jack London Sq) to Del Rio, TX here, http://www.amtrak.com/ you'll see they put you on an overnight bus departing at 10 PM to Santa Barbara, CA. Then from there you get on a train to Los Angelos, to catch that 25 hour trip out to Del Rio. So it is quite the trip, though doable. You'll be tired though when you arrive in Christoval .. Oh and for that, you can probably take a bus .. oh, I just checked, http://www.greyhound.com/ .. there's a 1 PM bus to Christoval .. but you wouldn't be arriving into Del Rio until 5:42 PM on the Amtrak .. Really I think the best way, if you don't mind flying and can afford it (and really it's not much higher than Amtrak .. in most cases at least), would be to fly into a major city close to there, and then take a bus to Christoval. The San Angelo Regional Airport is about 20 minutes away actually. You could take the greyhound (leaving at 2:35 PM) from there, or even a taxi since it's so close .. or actually one of the hermits or a friend of theirs might pick you up. They probably have guys flying into there to visit their community all the time. Planes flying into regional airports do tend to be more expensive though .. but the convenience might be worth it. Anyway you can check it out at http://www.travelocity.com/ Oh and also America's low-fare airline is http://www.southwest.com/ and they don't appear on travelocity or orbitz, etc. or anything. Ha! do I sound like a travel agent here or what?! Southwest doesn't fly into San Angelo .. but a few other airports in TX .. where you could probably catch a bus. I see they give you a lot of connecting flights, just trying Oakland or San Francisco to Midland, TX for instance (which is 2.5 hours from Christoval) I think that's the closest they get to there. Then there's a greyhound from Odessa (close to Midland) - San Angelo .. but it doesn't go to Christoval. You'd be close enough though. Anyway, if I can think of any other options, I'll add 'em here! Better get to sleep for now .. God bless! Edited November 5, 2010 by Chiquitunga
tnavarro61
Really, I am very amused to read your post Chiquitunga! This really made me think.. I am going to look at your links how much a plane ticket is. What if I get lost? Will I be able to ask help from strangers, or should I really be cautious? Hmm, this is exciting! I visited the Amtrak site and I think it's better.. and I cannot imagine myself travelliing for two days! A plane ride from the Philippines to USA (an airport somewhere in CA) is 18 hours. Traveling from Ca to TX takes up almost 36 hours, wow that's twice the travel from the Philippines! I hope I can ask help from you phriends if ever the immigration papers are approved. Please pray for us, I am really eager to go to USA, there are more "vocation" opportunities in the USA than here in the Philippines. There are more contemplative orders in the USA. Most Filipinos are interested in missions, thus less contemplative orders here. and a very few hermit community here, I only know two, both of which are for females. and when you become a hermit here in the Philippines you have to really explain that you're not a quack doctor (due to bad potrayal of media, I think most Filipinos think that hermits = quack doctors/faith healers)
Oakland, CA - Christoval, TX (where the hermits are) on Greyhound is a little over 50 hours altogether ..
