littlesister
Somewhere recently I saw a brief tape clip of Mother Assumpta speaking about the Center. Hopefully I heard this correctly : she was asked about the masssive renovations necessary, and replied that the study is just getting started. The convent quarters would be largely on the thrid floor, where now there is a good deal of office space. The other two floors ( exhibit areas, broadcast studios, meeting rooms, etc.) were not even mentioned. We'll all lhave to wait and see what the final decisions are, but there are an enormous number of artifacts and amount of equipment that would have to be relodged if the Center does not continue in some capacity. Our place in Washington iis just behind that building, so the two communities will be next-door neighbors. Initially, the thought was that visitors to the National Shrine right across the street would naturally find their way to the Cultural Center as part of their tour. Unfortunately, that never worked out very well, and recently doesn't seem to be working at all.
Skinzo
Well this deal has fallen through. I wonder what's next for the center. Doesn't look good. "The center is open only by appointment, and a man who answered the phone there Tuesday declined to say how the building is being used and referred all questions to the Detroit Archdiocese. " http://www.washingto...fwkC_story.html S. OnlySunshine
Mother Assumpta recently posted a letter online explaining that the Sisters have decided not to purchase the Institute because of limited resources: https://www.sistersofmary.org/images/files/Open%20Letter%20from%20Mother%20Assumpta_March_2_2011.pdf
Skinzo
Mother Assumpta recently posted a letter online explaining that the Sisters have decided not to purchase the Institute because of limited resources: https://www.sisterso...arch_2_2011.pdf
I can imagine the cost of renovation would be enormous. It was never built as any kind of residence. Contrary to what the Wash. Post article says though the Center is going ahead with plans for activities during the beatification of John Paul II. http://www.jp2cc.org/default.asp S.
