Okay, This Is Going To Sound Weird...

But this scenario has totally been eating away at me, and I just have to ask:

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, a world-crippling war, anything in which only a few humans would be left, would marriage become something like baptism is today (it's okay to do it on your own if it's an absolute emergency)? And it would be an emergency, since I assume there aren't always going to be priests accessible to survivors, and you might want to help the human race out a little by having a few dozen babies.

Would we just have to trust in God and the few previously married people left to procreate? Would we have to just accept that this is probably the end of our physical world?

I mean, I know this may sound ridiculous, but I'm asking now, since we won't have the phorum if the zombies take over. It's always good to have a contingency plan.

The sacrament of marriage is conferred in the exchange of the vows of the man and woman themselves. The Church requires the Priest, as well as the presence of two witnesses, in ordinary times, but these Church mandates are not required when no priest is available for the foreseeable future. (Desert island, Zombocalypse, etc.)

I think the correct answer is that there will always be at least a fragment of the Church left on Earth. And even if you do make babies out of wedlock, you can confess, or intend to confess. I think God understands.. especially with zombies running about

I actually had my students consider survival scenarios during a zombie apocalypse in class the other day. (C'mon, it's more interesting than listing the items you'd want to have on hand in the event of a hurricane.) Several classes did bring up the 'repopulate the human race' issue. During the actual immediate disaster of being chased by zombies and fighting for your life each day, it's probably not an issue, but for the future of humanity, it is. So, once things calm down, it's worth considering.

As far as the idea of Christian marriage goes, as long as you make wedding vows to each other (in the presence of witnesses, if possible), it would count, I'd think. In Medieval Europe, it counted even if you didn't go to the priests, though now if you want the Church to recognize your marriage you have to do it right. So, as long as you aren't avoiding going to a priest, and there really isn't one available, a make-shift arrangement to handle marriage ceremonies would probably be appropriate. Then, if you ever do find a priest, you can have the marriage blessed by the Church. Whatever community of faithful are left could pull off baptism and matrimony in the absence of ordained ministers, though apostolic succession would be broken if the nuclear holocaust takes out all the bishops.

Simply making babies for the sake of the human race in the absence of wedding vows would not be acceptable.

Good reason to marry early instead of waiting until your career is perfect. Do it now because the world may end tomorrow.

Hypothetically, what if there was a bunch of ladies left on earth, but only one guy. would he be required to marry just one of them and keep the gene pool as shallow as possible?

Would it be moral to kill zombies? I mean, obviously in self defense or in defense of the innocent it's oka, but what about just a random zombie not causing any harm?

Would zombies be affected by holy water? Are they like vampires? What if a zombie walked into a church offering Eucharistic adoration? Would the zombie possibly be healed?

These are all relevant questions! I think we should all strive to make our zombie contingency plans as Catholic as possible.

Personally, I think that zombies' souls have already moved on, and their bodies are just reanimated, thereby not making them human. But there's definitely a possibility that a certain breed of "zombie" would still have it's soul intact and have the ability to be reverted, but at that point it's hardly a zombie...

(By the way, I actually don't have a load of time on my hands, I'm just an amazing procrastinator.)
