Des Hommes Et Des Dieux

Yesterday I saw a really moving film: "Des hommes et de Dieux", that represents the history of the trappist monks at the algerinian abbey of Atlas (in Tiberihine) who were killed in 1996 by islamic terrorists.
The film was really great not only because of the history of the extreme sacrifice, but most of all because it gives a true and wonderful image of the real life of the trappist monks and of this singular and absolutely beautiful vocation.
It has been a real revelation for me.

Here is a brief clip, introducing the monks:

They are deciding whether or not to leave their monastery.

And another of them chanting!

I liked the song sheets they were holding. It made it clear that this was simple - a small liturgy created by these men, beautiful and yet every day.

I wish I could watch this marvellous French film.

But it isn't on the screen in the UK.

I'll have to wait to get the DVD in a few months.

Has anyone had the opportunity to see this movie yet?

I watched it eventually and I must say It was wonderful. I really recommend it. The monks were inspirational. Their struggle with the Muslims only make them that much more greater than they originally were to begin with.

Probably not in wide release here in the US.If it comes to the San Antonio area, it most likely will be at the Bijou theatre at Wonderland Mall
and Alamo Drafthouse or AMC.At the Alamo Drafthouse you can get regular food like hamburgers, etc.besides just popcorn.

It won first prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year. It got a terrific review in none other than the New York Times. I think that it will receive wide distribution than just LA and NYC--maybe to the big college towns, Ann Arbor, Madison, Iowa City, and the other large cities, such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston. Also Steubenville ;) Check the website. I have it on my Netflix wishlist and will post when Netflix has it.
