Maybe if somebody would just write MTV a letter. Ya know like with moral sense, but like not all judgemental. And like the letter would reference pop-culture in a way that enhances the argument or something. :teach:

So how does Steven Colbert producing the Colbert Report morally compare to Jonathan Swift writing "A Modest Proposal" which I recall having to read in my Catholic high school?
Colbert, in his satire, mocks the true ideas that are proposed by people actually standing up for sexual morality. Swift mocked the ideas that might well have been proposed by people who did not stand up for basic human dignity.

so obscene mockery is ok if it pertains to.... immoral people....

Dont forget some of those people standing up for sexual morality also belong in the immoral/hypocrite camp.(well everyone is immoral at times)

like Mr Newt Gringrich, married three times, cheated on first two wives, dumped the first one while she was recovering from cancer surgery and was carrying on an affair on the second wife, with a staffer, through the Bill Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, which he was quite vocal on. And eventually married that staffer. And yet he carries the torch for family values because of his stance on sexual morality.

People like this deserve whatever mockery comes their way.

It's not about mockery or pointing out hypocrisy. It's about the salacious way in which he does it. I'm not going to go over the vile stuff he says or does in his videos, except this: "You're quite the MILF" is not exactly something Catholics should be broadcasting on public TV as some sort of "joke." It's scandalous. Gravely so.

Notar, let's go back to the root of the word "scandal." Greek. Skandalon. Literally, a "stumbling block." The same stumbling block St. Paul said should not be put in the way of those who abstained from meat from "unclean animals." A scandal does not necessarily mean that someone is led into sin. It can be just as bad when it keeps people in sin, or prevents them from finding Christ, Whom we, as Catholics, are called to represent in this world. "Well, Stephen Colbert is a Catholic. If Catholics can say all those things, I guess there's nothing wrong with me saying them. I guess there's nothing wrong with masturbating, fornicating, sodomy, sodomite unions, etc." If you don't recognize the fact that he's supported those things in "humorous" ways, you need to watch some more of his stuff.

...so you're saying that a Catholic who is looking for guidance is going to be so moved by the words of Stephen Colbert, that he/she will make decisions on masturbation, fornication, sodomy, gay marriage and other issues?

I mean, I love the guy. But I don't think ANYONE loves him THAT much. I wouldn't formulate any opinion on anything based on the satirical assertions made by a comedian.

I form some of my opinions on how to be funny by watching that show.
