Innocent
This is the least costly Bible available here (around Rs. 450, whereas the JB is around Rs. 800, and NJB with footnotes, Rs. 750). My grandfather's RSV-CE which I am currently using has begun to come apart, (For my daily reading I'm currently using a printed out copy of this digitised Douay Rheims Bible.) and I was thinking to buy a new RSV-CE. However, I have had no success finding one, though the most famous Catholic bookstores here stock the NRSV and Protestant versions like the NIV and the KJV (and in one case, even The Urantia Book!) in the Bibles section. That's when I spotted the Translation mentioned in this post title. As I said, it costs Rs. 450, and the only Bible cheaper than this is the NJB Pocket Edition with very limited footnotes, costing around Rs. 250) The Amazon page for this Bible shows that all those who have reviewed this Bible have given it a Five-Star rating, with not even one review below 5-Stars. However, I also noticed some posters on the CAF observing that this translation is has a bias towards Liberation Theology. Links to CAF Threads: 1, 2. Thus you can see why I'm confused about this translation. I'd be glad to have your opinions on this Bible.
Innocent
I'm so sorry about this but I intended to post this to the "Transmundane Lane (serious spirituality)" sub-forum, but I got this mixed up with another thread and this got posted here. Could one of the moderators please move this thread to Transmundane Lane? Thank you.
KnightofChrist
I would suggest against it, because of the footnotes, and inclusive language. If you need a Bible badly and cannot afford one I would be wiling to have one shipped to you. Are you looking for one with footnotes/commentary? MithLuin
Hopefully this thread will be moved soon so you can get more responses. While 5/5 looks like a good rating, it was only 8 reviews, and the most extensive one was written by a self-proclaimed 'free-thinker', not a Catholic. The tone of the translation seems to be geared for younger readers (teens) rather than any kind of scholarship, but for daily reading, maybe that is appropriate. It will probably be very different from the Douay Rheims you are currently using. The English commentary is apparently written/provided by bishops from the Philippines? If so, that doesn't sound so terrible, though looking into it further may be a good idea. I've never seen or heard of this Bible translation, but I would probably steer clear of the Spanish translation if it's being used by liberation theology 'base communities' in Latin America. sistersintigo
Because my spiritual director, sr. Geneal OP, lives in a household of vowed religious who own this and other Catholic bibles, I was introduced to this edition. The translation compares favorably with not-necessarily-Catholic translations for attention to the Semitic/Hebrew/Aramaic sources as well as the Greek/Latin conventions. I bought myself a hard-cover copy and I really am happy to have it.
Micah
Hm, does the RSV-CE 2nd edition have inclusive language too? I ordered mine through a Christian bookstore, but I don't have it on me. I've been seriously considering a 1966 Jerusalem Bible. The structure is really nice.
