dairygirl4u2c
it seems like the attitude has softened against whether a person can vote for obama and be a good catholic. in past years, it was at least implied that one could not voice that sort of sentiment per 'it's permissible to vote for him', and at least be a good catholic *at phatmass*. even if said people existed, ya didn't see them much. Maggyie
Socialism in all its forms has been soundly condemned by the Church.
The Church condemns the atheistic materialism (and abolishment of private property) of socialism. However, she is OK with big government and re-distribution of wealth. In fact in his last encylical Pope Benedict spoke out against down-sizing welfare systems, reiterated the importance of labor unions, and emphasized the need to protect the environment, all attitudes that are sometimes considered "socialistic." dairygirl4u2c
citing long lists of things only tangently related to what bad obama has done, only hurts the credibility of the person posting. the only real things you could fault him for are appointing prochoice justices (or more specifically, not voting for prolife explicitly justices or who wnat to overturn roe. i doubt we'll ever figure out whether they are truly prochoice or not, or just following precedent. even roberts and some of the conservatives are not clear on their deference to precedent, but give sentiment that they're following it), and maybe the health and human services people who are proabort. in fact, the only things the prolife movement can take credit for.... is actually not that much. 'infants born alive' act was passed unanimously and almost with total support from democrats. 'partial birth abortion' act was more of just an ideological victory- the abortions don't stop, they just have to change the way they do them. 'stem cell bans' are nice for a theoretical and theological ban... ie, ya can't do tests on embryos, even though the embryos were already created for in vitro fertilization procedures that never happened. but it doesn't get around the fact that the embryos were being created anyway, and letting to die. you could score one for 'the ends dont justify the means. period.' but as a practical matter, nothing really changed. what progress has the prolife movement really done, at the federal level? another long list of tangentally related things doesn't help anyone. the kenya stuff isn't good, but i also doubt whether they're going to be prolife if it weren't for obama. more likely, that's the way they were already. you could assume this, especially given their general antilife culture, but also cause it's at the stage at least almost of being engrained by a constiuttion. that means the pubklic overwhelmingly supports it already. you cant just list a bunch of things and then think to yourself 'under teh totality, under length, i must have a case here'. examine each one, take out the croutons, and you wont be left with much.
the CC hasn't condemned 'minimal socialism'. and it's obviously given what hte popes promote, 'access to the earth as a guaranteed right' 'luxury taxes', 'fair wage', 'minimum wage etc etc, the cahtolic position to be at least minimally socialist. the only way to reconicle 'no one can be a true socilalist' quotes from the popes and the other things, is to say that minmal socialism is okay. you never hear folks like soc address the liberal quotes, the specific things i listed above or their specific content. at best you might hear 'popes are entitled to tehir opinion' etc, except when their opinion coincides with their beliefs, then it's a matter of church doctrine etc. usually soc goes whimpering away when the liberal stuff from the cc is shown. and there's eerie silences from most of these types of cookie cutter conservatives. but im suprised he's even now saying things like socialism 'in all its forms' is condemned, etc etc, even after taking all the beatings that he repeatedly does. maybe i shouldnt be surprised, cause he always takes the beatings and never learns, let alone addresses how he deals with them, particularly when the popes are the ones doing the beatings. dairygirl4u2c
plus i doubt hte health and human services appointees are going to cause that much harm. abortion is hte law of the land, the demarcations are set as law. what the executive does isn't gonna amount to much. it might make it a little easier, but i doubt it's gonna cause many if any, or even a few abortions maybe occur that otherwise wouldnt have. cause then you do have arguments like, 'if people have money they wont commit the abortion'. poverty is a stain in america, it's almost epdemic. many wouldnt abort if it were't for the terrible social policies. then, there's the stat that at least 40000 people die who wouldnt have, if it weren't for our terrible unjust health system. 'letting people die when they were entitled to live' might not be worse than 'directly killing people'. but it's not that far removed as worse. and, 'preventing abortions' may not be as good as banning them, but it's not that far removed. and the numbers on the this side im talkin about are probably much higher, more 'not dying' and more 'prevent the abortion' is probbaly higher than 'ban abortion' 'make it harder at the fedreal level' ever could muster. and given all the other stuff, i dont see much argument that voting prolife candidates is only is the only permissible action. (and then you have folks like mccain, who himself has said people who vote only prolife, are unintelligent for that move 'otherwise intelligent people'. and going his whole careers supporting it, until it's convenenit to flip flop. he probably would have got conservatives on the bench who'd keep Roe, meaning not much change. dairygirl4u2c
with all the above said, the qeneral question fo the thread is a little vague. it's never permissible to support a candidate who's proabort when the reason for the support is due to or part of tehir proabort ideology. a person could support a proabort only if it's despite their proabort positions, *when proportionate reasons exist*, to quote the popes. in princple, then, it's not wrong to support despite proabort, at least sometimes. in this thread, if the deabte is about 'proportionate reasons', that's a fine point to debate. and that's what my last few posts have been about. Maggyie
Well regardless, I don't think you can really trust lifesite news anyway. They tend to to distort things unfortunately, which is too bad because we really do need a spotlight shown on what's going on with the life issues. A good example is the VA manual that was given to veterans that supposedly encourages them to kill themselves. The big issue was that the manual had a checklist the veteran was supposed to go through that had boxes for things like "I am a big financial burden to my family" "I am emotionally burdensome" etc. Well, checklists like that are used all the time to determine the patient's state of mind and diagnose clinical depression or PTSD. When I was diagnosed with my GAD I had a form like that to fill out, and they weren't encouraging me to have a nervous breakdown, they wanted to see if I fit the symptoms for GAD, or something else. Maybe it was pro-euthanasia-ish, maybe it was a treatment tool, but we don't know since lifesite doesn't tell us that part. They are always leaving out the context, maybe not on purpose, maybe they are just not interested in it. dominicansoul
Aw, of course! Why didn't I think of that? If Obama hadn't won the presidency, we'd all be starving to death or being killed by various apocalyptic natural disasters a la The Day After Tomorrow, due to the GOP's evil murderous environmental policies. Since Obama in his Merciful Benevolence has saved us all from this horrific fate, we shouldn't begrudge that he supports the direct killing of innocent babies. Gotta put it all in perspective. All hail Dear Leader!
If McCain woulda won, little babies would still be getting aborted... McCain was NOT prolife... Methinks people are kinda silly to believe that republicans are conservatives... they are the lesser of the two evils..but evil nonetheless... B wants the government to stop C from killling five people by direct ban. If the government were to save those people through A's method, it's not like the sin is even on the government for killing those five people. It's C's sin. What I'm getting at, is Im not clear that it's more virtuous to enact bans on killing, rather than preventing killings or death by other means. Even without the numbers, I'm not sure which is more virtuous. Anyone wanting to get into philsophy here, might be helpful cause it's truly hard for me to the the best approach here.
You're speaking of "Caritas in veritate?" Could you provide the quote, please? The encyclical is rather long and I haven't the time right now to read it in its entirety. He speaks quite a lot of subsidiarity, which isn't a state welfare system. In fact: "subsidiarity is the most effective antidote against any form of all-encompassing welfare state" (57. Caritas in veritate) Taking the property of someone else specifically to give it to one deemed more deserving is theft. In very special cases (such as ruled in individual court cases), it seems one may determine that an action was so unjust that wages were, essentially, stolen. But to do this on the scale of a welfare state certainly involves theft.
Maggyie
The global market has stimulated first and foremost, on the part of rich countries, a search for areas in which to outsource production at low cost with a view to reducing the prices of many goods, increasing purchasing power and thus accelerating the rate of development in terms of greater availability of consumer goods for the domestic market. Consequently, the market has prompted new forms of competition between States as they seek to attract foreign businesses to set up production centres, by means of a variety of instruments, including favourable fiscal regimes and deregulation of the labour market. These processes have led to a downsizing of social security systems as the price to be paid for seeking greater competitive advantage in the global market, with consequent grave danger for the rights of workers, for fundamental human rights and for the solidarity associated with the traditional forms of the social State. Systems of social security can lose the capacity to carry out their task, both in emerging countries and in those that were among the earliest to develop, as well as in poor countries. Here budgetary policies, with cuts in social spending often made under pressure from international financial institutions, can leave citizens powerless in the face of old and new risks; such powerlessness is increased by the lack of effective protection on the part of workers' associations. Through the combination of social and economic change, trade union organizations experience greater difficulty in carrying out their task of representing the interests of workers, partly because Governments, for reasons of economic utility, often limit the freedom or the negotiating capacity of labour unions. Hence traditional networks of solidarity have more and more obstacles to overcome. The repeated calls issued within the Church's social doctrine, beginning with Rerum Novarum[60], for the promotion of workers' associations that can defend their rights must therefore be honoured today even more than in the past, as a prompt and far-sighted response to the urgent need for new forms of cooperation at the international level, as well as the local level.
Edited September 29, 2010 by Maggie
