There is nothing in the GIRM about African-American parishes having permission to do liturgical dancing either. They are not in Africa.
Hm... Cardinal Arinze would not be happy with that statement I think. He's repudiated the idea of the dancing African.

Also, in my own personal experience, I never went through the lifeteen phase, a phase which I find, in college, that alot of people have gone through. Many of them, however, are still there. A very good friend of mine, Erik, and I had a discussion about this, and really, lifeteen is not the end-all and be-all of someone's spiritual journey. He, and other friends of mine, have found it to be a stepping stone into the more traditional, and I think, richer forms of worship. I find nothing more exciting or invigorating than a cloud of incense and a full choir singing in Latin.
So, I guess my advice to all the lifeteeners out there would be to enjoy where you're at now, and get as much as you can out of it (assuming it's done properly ;) ), but, be open to new experiences in college and beyond.
In Christ,
Dave

oh gosh...I feel a rant coming on.
I live in Richmond diocese, Virginia. Some of the liturgical abuses you are describing happen every week in nearly every parish in the southern part of the state. It's sickening sometimes. What makes it worse is that the priests themselves are often responsible for incorporating their own politics into the Mass. They put their own spin on it and make it a 'Fr. Jim' Mass or something like that. Ridiculous. There is a strong orthodox movement in my diocese, but there are many young people who are getting the very wrong message about Mass. It is NOT about feeling good, it is about worship. It is not just about being there, it is about understanding. I think it is criminal when the people are kept in the dark about what the Church really teaches. It falls on priests and bishops to educate us. If they demonstrate failure in that regard then we must educate ourselves. Read Canon Law, the GIRM, and the writings of Catholic theologians who are (and this is important) in line with Church teaching. If they are viewed as controversial because of their liberalism, stay away. good rule of thumb.

how close are you to Arlington? The dicotomy between Richmond and Arlington is amazing. Richmond is known as being one of the most liberal dioceses in the U.S. and Arlington is known as being of the most orthodox/conservative. I would encourage you to go to Mass in Arlington whenever possible.

Norfolk!!!!!!!!!!! IT's HOPELESS :D
no, there's a great Tridentine parish in Chesapeake that I go to. one of the perks of having a liberal bishop is that they allow everything, even orthodoxy...
I have often fantasized about moving to Arlington when I get older. I went to church there for a few years when I lived in Fredericksburg, but my mom is one of those liberal Catholics so she has some issues.
