Yeah, I technically don't need a missal at the EF because I go to it often enough to know what's up. I bring a missal to the EF and OF for teh propers more than anything. Ideally, for both forms of teh Mass, I'd prefer to have time before Mass to rock lectio divina on teh propers and readings then teh missal would be superfluous for me. In RL that basically never happens though. Sad story.

Well, the Propers would be the biggest factor - since unless you speak fluent Latin you [i]don't[/i] know what's being said.

I don't go to the EF very often (although I enjoy it), but when I do go it's usually for special occasions/feasts. So they usually provide a guide for that Mass. But even so, I don't utilize it all that much. Before Mass I read through the prayers in English. During the Mass I just like to allow myself to be swept up in the experience of the worship. So I'm not necessarily reading the prayer in English while the priest is singing it in Latin. I've done that before but I feel like I get too focused on the particulars and forget to really participate in the Sacrifice as a whole.

Also, I know basic Latin responses, so I don't need to follow along to know when to say "Et cum spiritu tuo" etc.

I might follow a missal when the new translation is implemented, but probably not for very long. As part of the parish staff, a lot of what goes on Spring/Summer/Fall of next year will be revolving around prepping folks for the new translation. So hopefully I'll have it down by the time its implementation.

I don't use a missal for the OF since I grew up with it and have no problem understanding it. I do use the church provided hymnal for the Sunday readings. When I was able to go to the EF I went without a missal for awhile, but eventually I bought a Saint Joseph Daily Missal 1962 edition off of Abe Books. It was very handy and refrained from using archaic English in the translations.
