Fragments
*shrug* it's nothing new. He's always held these views.
Long Hawking quote about Einstein's unified theory: only when we understand this can we understand God's mind. So he hasn't completely ignored God in all of it, I think in general, he prefers science 'because it works' in a way that's simpler for him to understand however he has always been said to have been agnostic as opposed to atheist. He seems a very logical person, he will work through logically until he finds a solution that seems simpliest. With a mathematical theory dispting the need for a catalyst in the beginning of time, he has abandoned God in his arguments. Little does he know about the mystery of God. it's midnight here, not sure if his makes any sense.
Nihil Obstat
I think lately Hawking has moved way out of his realm of competency. People take him seriously because he's a genius in physics, but I don't think he's qualified to say some of the things he's been saying these days. Smart, yes. Genius, sure. Infallible? Definitely not.
kafka
Conte's commentary: The teachings of the Catholic Faith are generally on the topic of faith and morals. However, some teachings are on the topic of history, e.g. that the Fall from grace was an historical event, that the exodus of Israel from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land was an historical event, that the Crucifixion and Resurrection and Ascension were historical events. Other teachings are matters of faith, but include certain assertions in the realm of science, such as, on the creation of the universe, that God created heaven and earth. Christians are obliged to reject any and all hypotheses, theories, and claims of alleged fact, which directly and irreconcilably contradict the teachings of the Tradition, Scripture, Magisterium on any subject. “In ‘The Grand Design,’ co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday. ‘Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist,’ Hawking writes.” (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6811FN20100902) rest here: http://ronconte.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/heresy-and-science/

Sternhauser
Precisely, Nihil. As a friend of mine correctly pointed out, "As soon as a scientist ventures into metaphysics, he is no longer speaking as a scientist." ~Sternhauser Edited September 4, 2010 by Sternhauser
