Sarah147
lol This is neat. People all over the place are using them or getting them. I think they look like a lot of fun to try. But with my feet, I wonder how I'd be with slightly flat feet, wearing those shoes. Also, I wonder how strong my ankles would be? Hmmm...
Sojourner
Did you try them on first or did your order them online? I'm just wondering how true to size they are. Since I am getting them as a gift I can't really walk him into a store and make him try them on first. There is only one store around here that sells them and they are out of stock in more than half their sizes right now. I'm going to measure his foot, and he kinda knows he might be getting them already, but I know I can still dupe him into thinking that I just think they're too dang expensive. lol (Now I just have to hope he doesn't show up to lurk and read this thread. He probably will with my luck. lol)
I tried them on first, which was good. They are kinda a pain to get on the first few times you wear them, and one pair I tried on I just couldn't get my toes to go where they were supposed to go. I ended up buying the ones with leather uppers; they look like this (although I didn't buy them from this store). I call them my "gorilla feet." My suggestion would be buying them (ordering them if necessary) from the store near you, so you can return them easily if they don't fit.
I was hoping to elicit looks from all the college students as I go exercise in the morning.
You will get weird looks from people, and some comments. I find it kinda funny.
Sojourner
They say it has cut down on running injuries. It looks so fun and free, and it seems like it embraces poverty and simplicity. Personally, I have flat feet (I'm not sure how severe) and so I don't know how well I would do with it. There is nothing like walking barefoot on a sandy beach, especially near the waves.
I can't comment on the flat feet part, but I think these shoes are expensive enough that they can't really be said to embrace poverty, per se. Sojourner
They do look a little weird. Although, I don't think you'd necessarily notice them right away. It took my husband a few hours.
I've got it narrowed down to 3 styles based on looks (he wouldn't wear them if they look to girly lol), and by what Vibram describes them as "best" for. Since I know he wants them primarily to run in I don't want to buy one that's recommended for light trekking and climbing, ya know?
Definitely you should go for the ones that are built for running. Just be aware that the fit might be slightly different between styles. The two I tried on were both for walking/light hiking/trail running. I'm not a runner, but we do enjoy light hiking, which they've been great for. IcePrincessKRS
I've been looking at the Bikila, TrekSport, and KSO. The KSO looks like it might actually have the most give. I may have to run out to the store, even if I do order them, and just mess around with them to see how stretchy they are (if they even carry all three of the styles I'm looking at). (I don't really like the colors that the Bikila comes in, though, so that one is last on my list.)

I've only ever owned one pair of good running shoes (meaning I've owned several GOOD shoes but only one pair really supported me and felt "natural" while running) and these surpass those. If you go to a local running store (a RUNNING store, not a sporting goods store) where they really understand what it means to run, they should be able to help get you in the right pair. Also, most of these stores have a track or some place to run so you can feel what it will be like when you actually get out there.
Awesome. Now that's something I'd like to try -- barefoot running on a treadmill. I love going about barefoot at home. It's just so natural and free. There is even a Franciscan order that goes about barefoot in their convent, including in Chapel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leZ6t-1mVfs&feature=player_embedded
The CFRs go barefoot in the chapel always.
Yeah, their least expensive pair runs around $85. The average seems to be closer to $110. I am assuming they are manufactured to last a long time so would be worth it, but on a tighter budget it's a lot of money to give up all at once on something that's not a necessity. (Frankly I'm just cheap, I don't like paying that much for shoes. I was cranky when I had to pay $55 for a new pair of running shoes.)
This is actually an awesome deal for shoes that are comfortable and as natural as you can get to actual barefoot running. My most favorite pair of running shoes (Brooks) were somewhere around $135 when I purchased them two years ago. I love love love those shoes but I love these even more. I think I told you maybe a year ago when my roommate bought these and how they freaked me out. But run in them a few times and... SOLD!
i've tried them on, and i like them... but my budget was not ok with me buying them at the time... I would never buy them online without trying them on in a store first to get the right size
That's smart. Find a local store and ask for an employee who is not only an experienced runner but who also runs in these. There is a runner at my local Luke's Locker that is not only a huge fan but an avid runner - who runs in these! He was so helpful! Overall, . And I'll try to keep my opinion to a minimum on how I feel about making these "trendy" shoes...

I am not, so it's not worth it to spend that much on something I mostly walk around the house in. lol Matt has to run, so it'd be worth it for him. I consider 100 bucks to be mid-range, I guess, and Brooks and the like high-end (I have some friends who are daily runners and they wear Brooks). Since I use an elliptical and not something where I have high impact while I run, again, it's not really vital to me to wear something like that. As long as my arches feel good (I have high arches) I will buy the shoes, even if they only cost me $30. I go more for how they feel on my feet than anything, but like I said, I'm cheap. I don't LIKE having to pay 100 or more. lol

I bought one pair of Nike's that were $15 cheaper than the new model of Brooks and HATED them. I still don't like the newer pair of Brooks I have as much as I do my old worn out ones but whatever. Now I haver Vibrams!
