If it weren't for the fact that it appears that they are owned by Merell who's boots are (though awesome, especially when working at a camp) very expensive, I'm going to have to assume that these are as well.

I think she was speaking of running barefoot as seeming "like it embraces poverty and simplicity." Not the Vibrams. Those things are definitely not embracing poverty. (But I'm sure you already knew that...)

It probably would have done me some good to look it up before posting. They aren't owned by merrell, they just have a similar logo to merrell's "vibrant" tag on the boots. These are still expensive.

They are made by Vibram, who makes the soles for merrell shoes - so they do have the same logo! Not the same company though.

For a lot less money one could hunt down a pair of jika tabi and look like a Japanese construction worker, or just run in your actual bare feet!

Well there I learned something new today. Maybe this is something for the ppc? :P

  • 3 weeks later...

I bought a pair of the five-finger shoes a few weeks ago, even though I'm not a runner. I've worn them around the house and on short hikes. It's a little weird initially to have stuff between your toes, but you get used to it pretty fast. They're very comfortable, once you get past the weirdness of them. They're also supposed to be great for doing things like swimming in lakes, which I'd like to try out next summer.

How have they been for your joints?

i've tried them on, and i like them... but my budget was not ok with me buying them at the time... I would never buy them online without trying them on in a store first to get the right size

Great, actually. One of the reasons I got them is that I was having a lot of ankle and knee pain (left leg). I think it's because of the sandals I wore most of the summer, which offered very little in the way of support. And we've been doing a lot more walking/hiking lately (hubby's feeling better!) so my feet have been telling me they're not happy.

Anyway, things do feel better after wearing these.

He runs barefoot anyway. lol This will just help protect his feet from sharp objects a little better. :)

Did you try them on first or did your order them online? I'm just wondering how true to size they are. Since I am getting them as a gift I can't really walk him into a store and make him try them on first. There is only one store around here that sells them and they are out of stock in more than half their sizes right now. I'm going to measure his foot, and he kinda knows he might be getting them already, but I know I can still dupe him into thinking that I just think they're too dang expensive. lol (Now I just have to hope he doesn't show up to lurk and read this thread. He probably will with my luck. lol)

I was hoping to elicit looks from all the college students as I go exercise in the morning. :P
