Westminster Abbey is Anglican, not to be confused with Westminster Cathedral which is Catholic, where there is a side chapel for people to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament.

Often people cause offense unknowingly.....nothing wrong in gently pointing out to them that what they are doing may cause offense! Sometimes tourists do so many tours on holiday that they forget they are in a place of worship!

My Church put a cage sort of thing around it (the tabernacle and whatever)... sort of gives EVERYONE the message: KEEP OUT. I feel weird whenever I walk through it. Kind of get shaky in the knees sort of thing. I feel sorry for anyone who has to live with tourists during mass. I think thats sad. I think tourists in churches are great (with respect) but during mass is different. OH that reminds me, at a school mass cellphones kept going off. My friend got really mad, and so did the priests. They should make big Signs that say...

DURING MASS HOURS
no cellphones
no tourists
no photography (without permission)
no crying babies (go to the crying room)
no screaming children (go to the crying room)
no talking
no whining

GENERAL RULES
dont touch anything you dont know if you should touch or not
dont play with the holy water
dont take pictures of people going to confession
read the entire CCC before entering the church

The funny thing about that is that in front of my Church there's a sign that says something like, "This Church is a Holy Place...please dress in modesty...please turn off cell phones and pagers...please be respectful..." etc. LOL!

Selling Jesus out to detergent companies is a grave sin. If you do this, cover your ears and learn to speak yiddish, then teach a duck yiddish, then eat the duck. Confession will not help with this sin.

(just so you know) hahahaha

Went to Mass at St. Vibianas(the original Cathedral in Los Angeles) before they closed it down due to the earthquake. Many homeless people around who will drink from the fonts as well as go up to Communion many times to collect the Eucharist to eat as a meal. It is sad.
Quietfire, would religious pictures and stain glass windows depicting Christ, Mary, and the Saints also be considered graven images? Or do 3-dimensional carved objects only count?
sorry PaladinD, I didnt even see that post.
Answer: yes.
But Bro. Adams answered my question (and did so very well, I may add)

My church is not a catholic one.
but it it an historical one, and therefore we do get tourists. But none are allowed during service, and only on certain days.

I agree absolutely with the first 3 points here but have to say that the next 2 and even thelast three aren't quite as simple as that. 1) not every church has a crying room 2) many crying rooms are filled with parents who think that being in the crying room is licence to allow their children to run riot so to take the children there can sometimes do more harm 3)Children need to learn how to behave in church and to learn they need to actually be in church and 4) Sometimes it is really hard as a parent, particularly if they are on their own with more than one child to keep the children quiet also to get up and leave can be just as disruptive.

I think this post got to me as I go to daily mass with anything from1 to 4 preschoolers. Just this morning my 2 year olds behaviour was terrible, we have no crying room, I also had my 10 month old who was wanting to be held, my 4 year old who constantly wanted to know what page we were up to in his missal and my 5 year old who was actually very well behaved but kept trying to help with the baby, the baby didn't want him touching her so she screamed when he tried to. So my only option was to pick them all up and leave or just try to ride it out. I chose to ride it out, they didn't really improve. I was thinking afterwards that maybe I shouldn't go to daily mass, that I should just stick to Sundays when my husband is there to help. But the thought of not recieving My Lord in the blessed sacrament each day makes me feel like crying. I love being at mass(even when the kids are terrible)Starting my day with My Lord makes the day possible.

Anybody taking that many preschoolers to daily Mass is working on Sainthood.
What a blessing for our Church!!

As for the list, cellphones should be turned off at the door, and this should be posted.

There is nothing wrong with taking pictures or tourists if they behave respectfully, and its not during Mass etc. They simply need a simple explanation that we believe God is actually present in our Church, so behave like you are in the presence of your grandmother.

Crying babies can be a distraction at times, but the Mass is not an adult only affair. You do your best to shush them or you simply take the little outside and bribe/threaten/calm them down. Sometimes you threaten to hand them to their brother or sister :D

Children whine, so do adults.

The worst talkers in church are usually the little old ladies and little old men in the back of the Church.

What wonderful names your children have Michelle! :D

I don't have any children myself but I strongly feel that they should be at Mass and learning about Our Lord. Adults often forget how much children take in, even when they don't always appear to be listening! When ever I'm tempted to be grumpy about children in church, I'm reminded of Jesus attitude towards children, His love for them.
They are the future of the church when all the grumpy adults have gone!

I think being a parent is the probably the most important (and difficult!) job in the world and I am increasingly convinced that God takes great delight in those who are raising their children in the church....
But I have one question..
why all the statues? For what purpose?
To reflect?
This one has always been a brain teaser, I've gotten so many different interpretations of why.
What's your opinion?
Anybody?
Read the articles.

Basically, it's like a picture of a family member. People in Heaven are more alive than we are, and their prayers are more powerful than anyone's prayers on earth. According to the Church, Scripture and history.

There are images of Mother Mary on the walls of the catacombs in Rome that date back to around 90 AD... Statues and images are something that has been used in the worship of the Living God for over 5000 years.
