I've seen it done a lot of times in some of the Catholic groups I've attended. My spiritual advisor does it all the time. And from my understanding its bibically sound and a language meant for stronger prayer intention to God without the knowledge of the enemy.

I've never been able to speak in tongues, though at times I'm able to translate it.

From my experience, and the conversations I've had with my spiritual advisors over the years, only speak in tongues if it can be scriptually supported and translated, if no one else has a word from God as to what is being said, chances are, it's not coming from God.
