Maximilianus
What I see in a possible HBO show about the porn industry is a showcase for pornography. HBO has no problems getting dirty. Edited August 20, 2010 by Maximilianus
jiyoung
NB: I don't really watch any Mark Wahlberg movies so I'm flying mostly blind, and kind of speaking in a general sense. I've definitely never seen Boogie Nights (or Traffic). I won't be watching this remake or whatever either, so I'm not gonna be able to speak on it...but I don't know how you can get away without a certain degree of glamorizing the industry. And I think the problem is whether such a thing should be on TV at all, and whether a professed, practicing, public Catholic should be involved in such a project--it seems like it would certainly be a cause for scandal. Dave
I too have to wonder if Mark Wahlberg is as really a committed Catholic as that article claims. For starters, he lived with his then-girlfriend/fiance for a few years before marrying her, and yet even during that time I read articles claiming that he was a "faithful Catholic." I also remember reading somewhere that he said he prays before having sex (this was long before he got married -- probably even before he met his now-wife to begin with), saying essentially, "God, I know we're not supposed to do this, and I'm sorry . . . ." More recently he supported Barack Obama in his run for president -- DESPITE the fact that Obama's beliefs and policies are about as opposed to Catholic beliefs and morals as they can possibly be. Now, repentance is always possible, and maybe Wahlberg has since repented of these things via the sacrament of confession. I hope he has; if so it would be wonderful! But until or unless we know for sure that that was the case, we have to face the objective reality, namely, that for the past several years there's been a disconnect between his faith and his everyday life. OnlySunshine
I hate to spoil parties. Mark Wahlberg is revisiting his Boogie Nights years - he is planning to shoot another movie about the porn industry. The actor played a male prostitute in the 1997 film about the "golden era" of adult movies in the 1970s and 1980s. Now he wants to bring the story up to date by shooting a TV drama about a porn company struggling to compete with adult websites, and a girl who travels to Los Angeles hoping to make it in the sex industry. New York Post gossip column Page Six reports Wahlberg has teamed up with his fellow Entourage executive producer Steve Levinson and writer James Frey to work on a script for HBO. Frey tells the publication, "We're going to make a sprawling epic about the porn business in L.A. We're going to tell the type of stories no one else has told before, and go places no one has gone before."
That's unfortunate. I really loathe what the porn industry has done to individuals and the community as a whole. Hollywood seemed to think there was/is nothing wrong with Boogie Nights even though I always believed it was a MAJOR problem, not only for the viewers, but for the people involved in shooting the film. Porn is nothing to play around with and can/will lead to some serious problems.
CatherineM
If I had to live in Hollywood, and deal with all the temptations and distractions, I'd make daily mass a priority just to survive it.
StMichael
It isn't Hollywood, it is the people. When you want to become famous, ie. a false idol, you are asking for trouble. I really do attribute it to the fact that their schedules are so tight that they don't have time for God or prayer. Also, their ego gets inflated and they think they don't "need" God and He becomes an illusion or a creation of the supposed "weak." edited to add: I really do admire celebrities like Jim Caviezel who put their faith and family first before fame. StMichael
It isn't scheduling, they have all the free time in the world. Money, power, adulation, press, etc. Very hard to not let it go to your head on a small scale, let alone a macro scale. String together a few films that do well at the box office and you live in a huge home surrounded by yes people that you can do not wrong and you have access to whatever you want. How can you worship God, when you are worshipped like a "god." And what is the work of an actor? Not to think (that is the director's job), not to create (that is the writers job), but be a puppet. Guess it is great work if you can get it... StMichael
Short answer, yes. Long answer, acting leads to vanity, self-worship, not because of the act of acting or the so-called art of it, but what surrounds it. Furthermore, a married actor kissing another, again in the name of the "art" is that person committing adultery? Is that person projecting sin to others? It wasn't that long ago that actors were considered outlaws as they were pretending to be someone other than who they were (deceit), but now they are stars. Above us all.
