I hope this thread doesn't die out already. I'm increasingly becoming attracted to Stern's position but would like to see the whole thing fleshed out without flaming every other post.

Surpressing acts such as sodomy and idolatrous worship does not necessarily involve physical violence. If the people submit to the authority giving punishments for the immoral behaviour, then there is no need for violence. Violence would only be put into use when the said person would first use violence to oppose the authority.
