Alright, so another Carmel that has one like this is Brooklyn Here I took some still shots from the video on youtube on them (they are mostly in [url="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDFYE3-W9w4"]part 2[/url])

Personally, I like theirs the best! (probably because it's most like in the movie ) They just wear the simple tie around veil and have black shoes, which I like for postulants. And their habits/veils are my favorite too. Valparaiso's choir/parlour veils are a little different from the original long Spanish ones, and Brooklyn has the rope sandals!

The pictures are lovely. But, the prison-type fencing (which may well be electrical, too) made me sad. Because of the way it is constructed, it is obviously to keep intruders out, not to keep the nuns in, although I fear some anti-Catholics would interpret it the wrong way. Unfortunately, if this picture is in Brooklyn, the monastery has to deal with reality, and do whatever is necessary to protect the enclosure. Still, I find it very sad that intruders would feel the need to break into the nun's privacy, especially when the nuns live a life of poverty and have nothing worth stealing, except their privacy.

I believe the Discalced Carmel in Buffalo, NY has the same postulant outfit as Brooklyn was a foundation from Buffalo. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty locating photos.

I have no trouble with the fence at all--I understand completely. Sometimes I wish I, too, had a very high fence around my house.

What I was reacting to was ONLY the barbed wire, etc. at the top. Most pictures of enclosed communities that I have seen have high fences, but I have never seen barbed wire before (or at least I've never noticed it). Perhaps all Carmelite monasteries have barbed wire at the top of their fences, and I didn't realize it.

But, for example, the Summit, NJ Dominicans have a very high fence, but (I don't think) they have barbed wire at the top in order to further protect their privacy. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

No, you're right. I believe this is something unique to them because they're in Brooklyn. I've never seen/heard of another Carmel/cloister with barbed wire like this, although I'm sure they're out there. Yes, it does look a bit scary. And they have broken glass on the enclosure wall too. Don't know how to insert pictures, but my favorite is the one we wore for the SSND's in the 60's & before, pretty much identical to the one Julie Andrews wore in the sound of music, including the veil. Our dress however, was pleated front & back down from about a 6 inch yoke, We had to pleat our dresses each day once we got out belt on. Amazing what one gets used to, :>)_
