If you only wanted to share your message with two others, you could just pm them next time

I didn't know latin was so hated that I had to use it in secret.

Nope

It has to do with speaking to everyone who is reading. If you just want to speak to one or two people, an open forum is rude.

happy birthday jason!

The story about the British soldier whose life was saved when he picked up his rosary got me to thinking.... (always dangerous, sometimes ugly)....

Do you know ANY Catholic who uses the term "rosary beads?" I've been Catholic all my life; practically everybody I know is Catholic; nobody ever says rosary beads - everybody just says "my rosary, his rosary, saying the rosary, praying the rosary." Rosary beads is a dead giveaway the speaker/writer is not Catholic.

Another example. Dr. Martin Luther King. In his "I Have a Dream" speech, he says the word "Catholic" a couple of times, and he says "... when little Cath-o-lic children can play...." He says all three syllables. I've been Catholic all my life; practically everybody I know is Catholic; nobody ever says Cath-o-lic - everybody just says "Cathlic" with two syllables. Cath-o-lic is a dead giveaway that the speaker (writer doesn't apply in this case) is not Catholic.

Have you noticed any other dead giveaways - of a linguistic nature? I don't mean like walking into a Catholic church and not knowing what the holy water font is. (I did see a sign language interpreter once interpret The Holy See as "holy ocean" - he's Baptist...he doesn't know what the Holy See is. But that one doesn't really count.)

Post others you've noticed, and we'll count 'em up - insiders' ways to quickly identify outsiders.

1. British people have a firmer grasp of the language than Americans, in my experience, and I don't think it's at all weird that one would say "rosary beads."
2. King's vocal inflections were likely a result of the fact that he was a. Southern, b. black, c. speaking to thousands and thousands of people and e-nun-ci-ating.

Biggest giveaway for non-Catholics is during the Our Father at Mass when they keep going.

I refuse to cease my love for the Language of Mother Church, it's really too bad my small use of her sacred language offends you.

I never understood what the big deal was myself. A Latin word here and a Latin phrase there will not kill anyone.

I doubt anyone has an issue with latin. I think its just the attitude of the few that use it. KoC made it clear he is just trying to communicate to one or two other pmers when he does it. I personally find that to be rude behavior and i think its hard to argue against that.

You're point is so completely irrelevant there really no point in giving it a response. But heres a try, going to them privately about a topic they talked publicly about would be stupid and weird. Who does that? What I said didn't need to be sent privately or secretly, what I said wasn't rude but a complement. What I did is not at all uncommon on Phatmass daily, even hourly individuals on Phatmass have public conversions with each other which again makes your point of that type of public convo being rude completely irrelevant and one sided.

No I'd say my point is pretty relevant.

If you just want a couple of people to read something on a public phorum, that's rude. And its certainly an unchristian use of a language that holds pride of place within the Church.

Yeah, and so is ridiculing a kid in public online a Catholic phorum.
Thanks for sharing KoC.

There was a thread not too long ago that exploded into "Stop using Latin, not everyone understands it!" because one member used a short Latin phrase. It was an issue of not understanding, not attitude. Especially since the member I am referring to used the Latin phrase exuberantly and with good attitude.

Yeah, kind of a deja vu here. I'm not Catholic, hey I'm even writing in a foreign language right now. I don't have a problem with anyone posting latin phrases/words or quotes.

Do we really need to bring up everyone's past sins? I'm sure that a laundry list could be made about everyone. I think we should probably be in the business of forgiveness, not grudges.

If you read the posts by the person, all she asked was that a translation be provided, because she was feeling left out. She was responded to with nothing but snarkiness and attitude. Kinda sad for a place that calls itself Catholic, if you ask me.

And now your pulling bogus charges of pride out of the air. Trying to get another thread closed? This is my last reply to this foolishness of yours. What I said was not directed solely to just two individuals. I replied to them because of the topic they spoke about, good gravy, you're really making more of this than it is! If 3 or 10 people had similar stories and publicly stated those stories my public comment to them which was just "Catholics have a certain aurea around them that the world must see at times" would have also been directed towards to those individuals. Good gravy!

No offense but in that thread as in this one she went too far with her complaint. I used one latin word and was rudely accused of showing off, then being a liar for not manning up for making a typo, as well as some other junk.

This is all very lame.

I see this all the time, but no one can cite any specific study showing wikipedia to be repeatedly inaccurate, whereas I can produce studies that show the opposite.

I'd call the response "anecdotal evidence"...but I read that that was a fallacious form of argument on wikipedia. Everything on wikipedia is the anti-truth; therefore, anecdotal evidence is an acceptable form of argument.
