Ed Normile
I just say St Auggie, I wonder how many different pronunciations of St Thomas Aquinas last name has? I have heard Uh-key-ness A-key-ness, Uh-kwine-us.Then there is St Hippopatamus , I know this is not the right spelling, but I think Saints have a sense of humor. ed

Sojourner
I say "rosary" and not "rosary beads" but I wouldn't think twice about someone's Catholicity if they used the latter term. I would probably think it was a cultural thing, like how the Brits spell things wrong like "colour" and "honour" and "grey." I say "Cath-lic" and so does everyone I know, Protestant and Catholic alike. I have no idea how to pronounce St. Augustine's name. I grew up saying AW-gus-teen but in my MA classes learned it was said "Ah-GUST-in." After a couple decades of pronouncing it "incorrectly" I don't think I can change, so I just call him "St. Monica's son." I think the bigger giveaway is when someone leaves off the "Saint" and just refers to him as "Augustine," or refers to St. Paul as just "Paul." Hilde
I haven't paid a lot of attention to this but I think it's more common to say Paul the apostle and not st.Paul here. We call him Paulus and when you say that name(I don't know anyone named Paulus but rather Paul) you know who you're talking about.

Maybe because they are female people don't think of emphasising the GUS part so much. Just throwing shots in the dark here.

[/quote] I never said they couldn't. I just supplied Strunk and White's advice on the topic since their word carries a bit more weight than mine. Feel free to reject it. Who knows, maybe you will write a book on the language that becomes the standard.
