Maybe they think "Lord" sounds more personal. (Now that I think about it, it may have been his swimming instructor. Whatever, hah.)
It might have something to do with Cmom's point that they focus largely on Jesus, and not necessarily on God as One, or on the Trinity. Jesus_lol
There was considerably more latin phrases used in "Asterix" comics which i read when i was quite young. for the most part they were fairly easy to figure out. this thread annoys me, cause its making me partially side with KoC. however, i think Nihil's post summed it up best.
I agree, and I thank Nihil for that. I, for one, would LOVE it if Rexi, or KofC, or any other Latin experts out there would compile a glossary of common Latin phrases for those of us who didn't (or hadn't the opportunity) to learn Latin in school. I, for one, would be very interested, and would find it very helpful.

Provide links to websites that have already done this. http://www.yuni.com/library/latin.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_phrases http://latin-phrases.co.uk/ http://www.main-vision.com/richard/Latin2.htm http://latinphrases.info/ Some Latin Translators http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=English&to=Latin http://www.stars21.com/translator/english_to_latin.html And as always all you need do is ask me for a translation and I'd be more than happy to provide one, even for Latin I did not post (or my best shot). Lil Red
actually, if someone made a post with common Latin phrases and their translations, i would most helpfully pin it. of course, that's probably too much to ask.

eustace scrubb
i only read the first and last two pages of it, but this thread really rubs me the wrong way. it's coming off as snobbish to me. someone not knowing (or how to say) certain words does NOT make them Catholic. how many people do you know who were brought up in the Church, are familiar with prayers, (parts of) the catechism, Latin, the right pronunciations, etc, but don't care at all about the Church? i saw this everyday in the year i spent in Catholic high school. everytime i go to mass, there are many people who look at me with contempt when i don't do something correctly. it's discouraging, intimidating, and insulting. if i wasn't convinced that Roman Catholicism was true, i'd have given up months ago. please show people some grace and don't be quick to judge others. /rant
loveletslive
"message" instead of homily/sermon "service" instead of Mass "preacher/father guy" instead of priest referring to all catholic churches as cathedrals "robes" instead of vestments/chasuble i went to a non-denom service last week so i noticed a lot of things like that. i think prots start prayers with "heavenly father, we thank you..." a lot. i can't recall if catholics say that? i don't think so?
