"do You Like The Neutral/mellow Emo?"

I have no idea why this thought came to me last night, but I never use the "neutral/mellow" emo, that is .

I know that many of you are very fond of it, and find it very useful to express a neutral emotion, but the lack of expression and small mouth, makes me think of "pursed" lips.

I was in a very strange mood last night, and I saw the mellow emo in a post, and it didn't seem neutral. Actually, it made me wonder if the poster was constipated. It kind of reminded me of Queen Victoria's "We do not approve." I KNOW it was not meant that way, but that is how it came across to me at that moment.

I tried to figure out why, and as best as I can guess, the reason for this is that when we are having a one-on-one conversation with someone, our faces are rarely expressionless, as this emo comes very close to being. I might keep an expressionless face in a group, but when talking to one person, there is always some sort of expression on my face.

This is no big deal--which is why I posted it on the Lame Board. Just a new thought that came to me last night. I expect that most people will disagree with me. I haven't decided whether it is a curse or gift that I often don't react to almost anything the same way other people do. Whatever it is, my "differentness" is so much a part of me, that I can't change it because it's in my soul.

Anyone else feel this way about the emo? Or, are there any other emos that you react differently to than others do? For example, emos you love, or others you don't? Or vice versa, emos you dislike that others love?

I've also discovered recently that while I like the emo because, to me, it connotes friendship with NO sexual overtones, other people may not see it that way. In my world, kissing on the cheek is something you would do when saying good-bye to a close friend, of either gender and has NO sexual connotation whatsoever. Heck, I have been known to give Sister Helen a quick peck on the cheek. So, if you get the kiss emo from me, it's the same friendship I feel for an elderly nun. (A very high compliment, actually.)

Some groups of friends give friends of the opposite sex a quick peck on the lips, again with NO sexual intention. However, I've never felt entirely comfortable with that. Although I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed watching my very straight-laced boss, when one of my very affectionate, "kissy" male co-workers (he's an ex-actor) gave her a quick peck on the lips after not seeing her for months. I loved the expression on her face--a mixture of surprise, an impulse to disapprove, and yet she was pleased by the gesture. By the way, everyone in knows that this male co-worker is very affectionate by nature, and is VERY popular with both men and women because he is both caring and wise, and a brilliant lawyer, but he also talks very frequently about how much he truly loves his wife--and I know him well enough to know that it's no act, his wife is the world to him--so there is no misunderstanding. There is no hint of sexual harassment and he would not kiss anyone who would be uncomfortable or misunderstand. My boss was a little different because they had been co-workers and friends for at least 15 years.

I don't think there is a correct custom, (although, except for this one friend, I would never kiss anyone in the workplace on the cheek, except maybe at a good-bye party.) The best custom is one that makes your feelings clear, and does not leave the other person uncomfortable or confused.
Reactions? Thoughts? Vignettes? Emos? --This emo is Sister Helen feeding the birds in my yard.

Edit note: Some day I will start a thread without a typo in the title. Probably not in this lifetime. But, it's very frustrating because I can't fix it.

Touche. I love it!

And, I'm so glad you agree with every word of my post and are grateful for my brilliant insights because they have enriched your life. Heck, someone can read anything they want to into a neutral expression, so I will.

To me the mellow emoticon is applicable in certain circumstances. To me it seems to say "huh?" or "are you serious?" although sometimes I use it in joking circumstances. I tend to overuse emoticons because my sense of humour is heavily sarcastic and dry and sometimes doesn't translate well in teh interwebs. I'd rather be accused of an over-liberal use of smilies than to be accused of being a jerk.

It can be used for things like

And I was like, wow, and he was like, wow, and I was like

I use it when I would use a similar blank expression irl, which I would do even in a one-on-one conversation. It means, to me, basically what Peyton say -- "seriously?" -- or I use it to indicate sarcasm.

Are you the Who?
To whom are you directing the question? Even if it isn't me, I'll answer.

I think in their early days the Who may have come close to being evil, as did Jim Morrison.

But, now the Who is one of my very favorite musical groups, I think because they started as trained musicians, so they play music, not noise. Not everything they have done is brilliant, but overall, they are on my list of one of the most talented musical groups ever.

Jim Morrison definitely had a part of him that was evil. He made me uncomfortable when I was young. But, after all these years, I think he has one of the most unique singing voices of any rock musician ever, and the guitar and piano in the Door's music is as good as any professional classical musician--totally different, but in its way, just as brilliant.

In comparison, I think Mick Jagger is a poser, although several members of the group are the finest guitar players ever. (I'm forgetting names, which I feel bad about, because they are such good guitarists.)

I feel the same way about the guitar work of Led Zeppelin. Again, the group made me uncomfortable when they first came out, but its brilliance has held up over time.

Growing up in the SF Bay Area, there was a lot of evil. The "summer of love" was anything but. It took me quite a few years to get past the "atmosphere" in SF at the time, and the personalities (and problems) of certain musicians, and simply listen to the music without the "baggage."

Totally off-topic.

I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. I also always liked Jim Morrison and the Doors' stuff but not like Zeppelin. Morrison was a moody talented guy whose drunkenness and drug use fueled his creativity but also killed him. It's probably really easy to be super creative when you are on an acid trip.

I always loved the Stones, too. The Who....meh. A few good tunes but I always sort of felt the same about The Who as I did about Kiss, that they were more about the show than the music.

It started because you posed the question, "Are you the Who?" with no other context.

So, it started me rambling on musical groups of the same era as the Who, while completely ignoring the title of the thread. I do that sometimes--even if it is my own thread. I don't have a linear mind and it gets out of hand sometimes. No substances, illegal or otherwise, needed.

So far, it looks like my off-topic trip down nostalgia lane has not gotten the thread off track, and it's getting about the attention it deserves--little to none.

On the other hand, for all I know, you may be tripping. I'm not there, so I can't tell. Peace, man.

Makes sense to me. For better or worse, I can't do a blank face very well in RL. My emotions show all over the place, sometimes to my detriment.

IRL, if I was indicating "seriously" for example, I would raise my eyebrows. Sarcasm is usually very evident in my tone of voice. But, I don't feel the indicates sarcasm very clearly. It can be read too many ways.

It's good for me to read what other people see in the emo, because I'm afraid that after my dumb, random thought last night, it will always indicate constipation to me. That, or Queen Victoria, depending on the poster and the context.
