Mark of the Cross
If I was in the military, I wouldn't much care the orientation of the guy watching out for my butt on the front lines. And I in turn would watch out for his -- again, regardless. Excuse the terminology.
I would be concerned if someone was watching my butt for sexual purposes in preference to my safety! In fact I would be peeved if someone was watching my butt without it being a safety issue. When I was in the army there was virtually no privacy. For a modest person like myself I would find it extremely confronting to be sharing open showers and bedrooms with a gay person. Being a 'private' person it was confronting enough being with peers. It would be the same as women having a male share their showers and bedrooms when many women's modesty prevents them from sharing with other women. Gay people may be accepted in the Oz military, but in my time it would probably get you beat up and hounded out. Although it has been said that the army is a trap for collecting misfits who can't do anything else. (probably why I ended up there) the discipline and moral character of the better soldiers often either rubbed off or was beaten into them. There are tons of desk jockey jobs. Height requirements is one of a number of ways the military discriminates. Discrimination is not always a dirty word. But a gay man could compromise the integrity of the military, on and off of the battlefield. For example, someone in intelligence could be blackmailed into handing over secrets. "Supply me the goods or your family back home finds out who you are." I know. There's a fix for that. Right? Just remove the social stigma of being homosexual, and families will accept with no qualms their homosexual sons and daughters. And isn't that the real reason opening the military to homosexuality is being pursued?
Just so you know, it's not just gay people who can be blackmailed. There are plenty of ways and instances of integrity being violated in the military.

We now know the left's strategy for getting what they want, like gays in the military. Declare serving in the military is a right and abuse the judicial system into getting what you want. Homosexuality is a lifestyle and not the same as physical attributes like gender and race. I am sorry modern media, etc. has formed your opinion into what it is. I would appreciate it if you avoid calling people like me, who believe the military is not a petri dish for social experiments, racist and misogynistic. It doesn't help your cause. Fragments
I personally have no issue with homosexuals serving in the armed forced. I figure it's a job, if the problem is with homosexuals having a jobs in the publc view in general then maybe that's the wider issue. Seperate sexuality from ability to perform the task at hand, seems easier. Also, as the question says 'openly gay' would that not then discriminate even between homosexual people, basically sending the message if you wish to tell people, you will lose your job. Seems it would just force people to hide their sexuality more and therefore numbers wouldn't actually change much. Final point, I'm sure somone will have mentioned it, there is the theory that the personal want to keep their fellow soliders alive might actually aid battle tactics. Anyway, opinion out there. The Canadians have no problem with openly gay members of the military. Here is a description of a gay military wedding in Canada. Unfortunately, the original news reports are no longer available, so I have had to link to a Wikinews article, but the facts are accurate. I remember the event. The event happened in 2005 and at the end of the article it states, "same-sex marriages are recognized and performed in seven provinces and one territory across Canada". Now same-sex marriages are recognized in all 10 provinces and all three territories in Canada. Yes, I would rather live in any one of the second set of countries over any one of the first set.
