Vincent Vega
VERY CAREFULLY. Srsly what if you took two toilet paper rolls (or paper towel or whatever - cardboard rolls), wrapped the necklaces around one of them (one at a time, like in a line), slit the other tube along the length of the tube, then sort of "wrap that around the other one. The slit one, after being "stretched" open, should sort of spring back to its original shape, and if they have the same diameter, then the pressure from the slit one should prevent the necklaces from sliding about. Also, the whole paragraph above was just to justify my lame joke. Try it anyway.
I don't know how many necklaces you have, whether they are valuable, and how well they need to be packed (or example, to survive a plane trip among the checked baggage versus a car trip). Other people may have easier answers, but this is what I do. On Ebay, you can buy plastic bags that are nice and thick, and seal at at the top, but are a smaller size than the plastic sandwich and freezer bags at the grocery store. And, the price is generally very cheap. They come in more sizes than you can imagine. For example, some plastic bags are long and thinner, and look like they are designed for necklaces. Then, I'd put one necklace in a bag. Then, I would put several smaller bags with necklaces into one larger plastic freezer bag with a slider top so it stays shut. (I say freezer bag because they are thicker.) I'd put them among my my softer clothes so they'd be less likely to be damaged. You could also roll up in the freezer bags in bubble wrap. The bubble wrap also makes it harder to identify the contents as necklaces, so they might be less likely to be stolen--since all checked baggage is opened up these days. If any of your necklaces are valuable--whether due to cost or sentimental value--I wouldn't put them in checked luggage but hand carry them on the plane (minus the bubble wrap so the TSA folks could see through the plastic that it was a necklace and not some estoteric part of a bomb). I'd love to hear others' ideas. They are probably easier ways to keep necklaces from tangling. But, not rubber bands--for obvious reasons. But, thanks for trying, notardillacid. And, for all I know, rubber bands may work very well for whatever it is you are packing. Edited July 31, 2010 by IgnatiusofLoyola

When you get all the way around, put the next necklace on the paper towel. Wrap around both necklaces. Then add another necklace, and wrap around all three, then all four...etc. Or, try plastic baggies.

The only downside I can see is that if your necklaces are in your carry-on luggage, the TSA folks like things to be in plastic wrap, plastic containers, etc. so they can see what they are. And, paper towels could tear. But, for packing for a car--perfect, and easier than my plastic bag idea.

Hilde
Tiny seperate bags put in a larger plastic bag. If you are scared of scratches you can use a bit of bubble wrap if you have that, or soft paper.
