kafka
modesty is a matter of degree, based on situation not a matter of culture for example what is modest at the beach would not be considered modest in a Church. What is modest between a husband and wife in private where a certain degree of nudity would be appropriate from time to time would not be modest in public. With the bikinis I think they are immodest in spite of the acceptance of the culture because they are by nature provocative. They are unreasonable since they are designed with the reason (whether intended by the woman or not) to reveal the bodily parts which symbolize feminine beauty. Only we are fallen and the bad consequences of wearing a bikini far outweigh the good consequences because of concupiscence in men and women. Even a woman who wears a bikini has concupiscence. She might tend to want to show off and captivate men, or maybe she is more or less wearing one without any bad intent but then she might tend to act immodestly and provocative while wearing it on the beach in front of men. She might be easily influenced by the bad example of other woman. Its common sense. It doesnt take a whole lot of debate or rocket science. Modesty is a matter of prudence. Applied wisdom. Common sense. Edited July 20, 2010 by kafka
modesty where it is not a matter of degree is universal. I dont know what the beach attire is in Saudi Arabia, but what is accepted as 'modest' at the beaches in the U.S. is not truly modest since the majority of the women wear revealing and provocative attire. Now the circumstance on the beach is by nature different than the circumstance than say in the office so a woman or man may dress differently or to a different degree, but it still has to be modest within that circumstance. Dressing immodestly is about causing sexual excitement. In America, few guys would be seriously aroused by a woman wearing a one piece and t-shirt. In a conservative Muslim country that would be a very sexually provocative outfit. Men in America are used to seeing more skin. A sun-dress isn't sexually exciting. In a culture where the norm is for women to cover everything except their face and hands, a sun-dress would be very sexually exciting. I see your point, but I still do not think the culture is absolute in setting the standard for modesty. Brother Adam
Has this thread really gone on for 9 pages? The problem is that modesty is not entirely subjective even if it varies from one culture to another. If this were the case - it is purely culturally subjective, we really would have no other choice than to dress head to toe even when swimming because we may cause someone to stumble (your Muslim example), or you can take the opposite path and then it is difficult to ask anyone to cover anything at all at any time - but that would violate temperance. See CCC 2521-24. Edited July 21, 2010 by Brother Adam
I'm calling my travel agent to cancel my "Beach Party Bash" vacation to Saudi Arabia. Thanks for the warning. This whole thread is interesting, but totally irrelevant to my life. I haven't been in a swimming pool or at the beach for at least four years. I wear my bathing suits in the privacy of my own home when it's hot outside. So far, my cats have shown no religious objection. I keep my shades drawn so the Sisters across the street won't be scandalized. And, for at least 6 months of the year, it is too cold outside to go out anything but modestly dressed.
