Q About Modest Swimwear

We take our youth group camping next week along the lakeshore. Of course the kids are going to want to go swimming - what restrictions on swimwear and clothing should I place?

Should men be allowed to go shirtless while swimming? Should women be allowed to wear bikinis (some of the youth complain that is all they have).

girls can wear shirts over their bikinis. my general rule of thumb is no two pieces (unless they are modest tankinis), and guys need to wear a shirt while swimming. no exceptions. i just tell them we want to protect our brothers & sisters in Christ by not ogling them.

Hmmm. Dunno. :idontknow:

Assuming they're in puberty and might experience lust I would say . . .

If they only have bikinis, then make them wear a t-shirt too. Go to the local thrift store, and buy a bunch of cheap L and XL t-shirts just in case they "forget" to bring one. I've got no problem with making the guys wear them too.

Thank you. I "knew" that, but I needed someone else to say it so I know I don't sound crazy.

How does this sound?

Clothing

A Note on Modesty – When we do not dress modesty we can cause our brothers and sisters to sin and we place our own dignity in danger. Clothing must reflect a Christian atmosphere at all times. Shorts should be no more than 3 inches above the knee, no tank tops.

For Swimming: No bikinis/2-pieces. If you only own a bikini plan on wearing a t-shirt over it. Men should plan on wearing t-shirts while swimming. This is a common youth ministry practice.

Pack the clothing you need for the trip. Remember to bring warm clothes for overnight, and pack rain gear just in case. We will not cancel for rain.

Also

Towels for the showers
Toiletries
Personal Bible
MP3 players (optional, but not recommended)
Snacks (optional)
Cell phone (optional)
Sleeping Bag
Water Bottle

No expensive electronics or jewelry, no explosives, no light sabers, no time machines, no alcohol or drugs. If you have prescription medications please inform the chaperones before we leave. No medieval armor or swords. No videogame systems or portable tv systems.

I speak on my own personal beliefs about this; modesty is very important to me.

I have a problem with bikinis. I know many people say, "It's the culture, it's what everyone wears, people are used to it..."

I have spoken to many guys I know, my husband included. They all agree that bikinis are provocative at best. I think they should be avoided completely, and it's pitiful that some young women ONLY have bikinis for swimwear. I understand it's hard to find a modest swimsuit on the market ... but I believe that's what we're called to, even if it's difficult. There is absolutely NO difference between a bikini and women's regular undergarments (sometimes bikinis are even WORSE) -- so wearing a bikini is tantamount to running around in your underwear.

A "compromise" could be to wear a T-shirt over their bathing suit. My dermatologist recommends this anyway, because it helps protect your skin.

I went to Schlitterbahn the other day, and I was greatly impressed with the muslim women who were there. They wore something like what is displayed in this website, and I was wishing I could get my hands on one. they weren't in veils, though, but they wore the body-suit bathing suits and they looked pretty sharp imho...

My wife has one similar to the suits on the left side of this page: http://modestswimmingsuits.com/

I like that it has a skirt thing so that it isn't just like wearing panties in public. It is still a bit . . . inspiring, however. Although maybe that's just because it is my wife I'm talking about. ;)
