Pictures Of Carmels

miserere

Recommended Posts

Well, I suppose if I'm going to be a good member, I should post some. :) Here's an album (not mine) of pictures organized by Carmel, with pictures outside, inside, and it seems also of brochure things. I am sorry to say that Vee8's Carmel is not present, but there are plenty of others, and it fits with the theme of the day. LOL "my" Carmel :hehe: I know what you mean i'm just amused that's all. That compilation of Carmels is sooooo.... *happy sigh*. It's nice to know that places like that exist on Earth even if they never let me in, or more likely kick me out after three days

So I looked at a few of the pictures. They were gorgeous! Thanks.

But it sure looked like the seating in the public area of the Valparaiso chapel was composed of chairs, not pews.

And so there are no kneelers.

I would expect that, maybe, at Baltimore or someplace similar (although I will go on record as considering the lack of kneelers to be a Right Shame).

But VALPARAISO???

This strikes me as quite odd indeed.

A priest friend of mine is up at the Elysburg Carmel for their celebration and he posted these two pictures:

The sacristy:

The high altar:

I think if you look at it again, there are kneelers in the chairs. You can get those, the adoration chapel near me has chairs, albeit with the cushion parts, that come with kneelers. It would be quite sad if there weren't any! :o

The post above explained that there are kneelers in the public area. Whew! I would fully expect that services at Valparaiso would include kneeling, and I can't imagine most members of the public being penitential enough to kneel on the floor (not to mention those that wouldn't be physically able to kneel on the floor).

I've never been in a Catholic church or an Anglican church that didn't have kneelers and altar rails. (Although, I confess, it's been years since I've been to a church of any type for physical reasons.) I was very surprised when I learned that some Catholic churches don't have kneelers or altar rails, but I would have expected Valparaiso to have both. And, apparently it does.

 Been there and they have them  They have the same type of chairs with kneelers at the Carmel of Cristo Rey (where Valparaiso came from) too.

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, everyone! And thanks for the pictures from Elysburg, TeresaBenedicta!!! Awesome! And yes, this is a great compilation of pictures and information on different Carmels! I've seen it before and often look through it ..

I know nothing about this Carmel, but I can't imagine a more beautiful setting for a Carmel community than Carmel, CA. Take a look at the bottom of the home page on this link. Gorgeous!

There is another wonderful picture of the monastery under "History."

A lot of churches in Europe don't have kneelers for example Notre Dame in Paris, St John Lateran in Rome and St Mary Major in Rome. In the past I think people knelt on the floor or, as can be seen in the Teresa of Avila miniseries, brought a mat to kneel/sit on. Now people continue standing for the consecration.

Valparaiso does indeed have kneelers that are bolted to the back of the chairs-- which means if you are in the very front row, you kneel directly on the marble floor. From experience, when I go there, I choose the second row.
