I'm asking; If you think it should be made illegal, then provide how you would write a law which specifies the penalty for those who violate it? If you think it should be made illegal, how do you get others to vote a law with the penalties you've prescribed ? Sorry if my questions on the issue upsets you, but its the topic of this thread. Jim
Do you think abortion should be made illegal? I will accept three answers. Yes, no, and the anarchy position in which you believe there should be no laws whatsoever on any issue. I have a feeling you don't like the third option. So, if you answer yes, then answer your own question. If you answer no, justify yourself with Catholic morals.
The problem is...how do you get around some of them? Murphy, BP, Shell, and Exxon all popped out at me on the list...you've got to fill up somewhere. I notice both the Delta Air Lines Foundation and US Airways, Inc. are on the donor list. The sad thing is that the modern air traveller is a slave to the cheapest fare (which is, by and large, why the industry is the way it is today). It would be nice if we could avoid all of these companies, but in some cases (like the gasoline instance), we don't have much of a choice.
JimR-OCDS
Nihil Obstat Do you think abortion should be made illegal? If I had my druthers, yes and I would like it if everyone would accept Catholic teaching on abortion and we could make a law that is enforceable . But I live in the real world where many do not share my beliefs. I will accept three answers. Yes, no, and the anarchy position in which you believe there should be no laws whatsoever on any issue. You don't know what I believe so just stick to what you believe and we'll be better at discussing the issue. I have a feeling you don't like the third option. Your feelings are yours, not mine. However, we in the USA don't live under anarchy, but in a country with laws. In order to make something illegal, you have to make a law and that law has to have weight behind it or else its meaningless. So, if you answer yes, then answer your own question. I do not believe its possible to write a law here in the USA to make early term abortions illegal and get it through congress. I do not believe that people in general, would want to see doctors who perform such abortions prosecuted as murderers, for as I've pointed out before, the majority do not see such early abortions in the pre-viable stage, as murder. It doesn't matter what we believe. Our beliefs can only be made into law with the majority supporting the law. So, I don't think its possible in the USA. If you answer no, justify yourself with Catholic morals. Adhering to Catholic morals and trying to write them into secular laws where the political body as a whole does not accept those moral beliefs' is not possible, unless you can convince them to vote against their own beliefs. You could no more get birth control banned even though its based on Catholic moral teaching. Jews and Muslims make up a good percentage of people in the medical profession, so no way are they going to send their own to prison for something they don't believe to be immoral. Today the Catholic Church's moral standing is pretty much scoffed at by the majority of our society, especially in light of the sexual abuse scandal.
Do they directly fund Planned Parenthood or directly fund abortions, or do they fund things line the United Way, which may give financial support to PP? I don't know if PP is a 501c Charity. If not, businesses wouldn't donate to them directly, because it wouldn't be tax deductible. Jim Edited July 20, 2010 by JimR-OCDS
MIKolbe
planned Parenthood is a 501(c)3 organization, with some entities of it being a 501(c)4, which is not-for-profit. Contributions are tax deductable. i could only find this from 2005..
