Laudate_Dominum
Humans and Neanderthals probably fell in love and made babies together. Unless you're ancestry is pure African you're probably part Neanderthal. Wooot@! The following press release explains the recent findings of the Neanderthal Genome Project (it is a PDF). SMM and I were speculating about this last night. Like, imagining that the Neanderthal women matched the homo sapiens standard of beauty of the time but in an exaggerated way. Supernormal stimuli. I daydream that they would have been exotic and prolly spoke with an epic Neanderthal accent. lol. Would be cool if dudes were going crazy to marry a Neanderthal woman. Okay, not likely, but still, would make for a funny world in which to set a movie. Although... Wider hips, stronger legs, sturdier frame, maybe their hair and skin features were considered beautiful (red hair?). Maybe they could beat homo sapiens men at arm wrestling and this was considered uber attractive... lol.

I prefer to think of them as both depending on the context. If the Neanderthal Genome Project has really demonstrated interbreeding then I think the subspecies classification has more merit. The ability to produce fertile offspring is a pretty big deal imo. The only problem I have with thinking of them as "merely" a subspecies (or race) is that it doesn't do justice to how separate we are (or were) for so much our of evolution. Homo neanderthalensis and homo sapiens sapiens diverged a long time ago and the morphological distinctions are significant. But anyway, the taxonomy is an invention of man and isn't necessarily an ontological distinction.
Hilde
Yeh if we are truly seperate species producing fertile offspring wouldn't work as far as i know from what I'v elearned in biology. What I had heard is that we and the neanderthals grew out as seperate branches from a common anchestor. But I also have a difficulty considering them another race( how this is used for humans such as black, white etc is not the most scientific) because although there can be great difference between a chihuahua and a grand danois, one doesn't wear a tie and make hadron colliers while the other acts like a total neanderthal.
