MIKolbe
is "ACROST" acceptable? When spoken, it wears on my last nerve..and my boss says it... and I flinch every time he says it. Then, I have an associate who says STRAWLS, instead of STRAWS. What the heck?

[/quote] I thought maybe it was one of those British terms like saying "amidst" instead of "amid," but I looked it up, and it isn't. It's just wrong. My old boss used to pronounce the word "picture" as "pitcher." Drove me nuts, especially since she was otherwise an extremely intelligent woman who was a stickler for correct punctuation and spelling.

Doesn't bother me as much, probably because all my little siblings (and probably myself at one point) said it like that and might be explained, but adding sounds to words that have no business being there is just wrong. I don't pronounce it that way myself, having been raised in New Mexico, but many of my Midwestern compatriots say it...
