Big Johnny Cash fan here. BIG fan.

He even did a children's album, which is outstanding.

As for Christian music in general ...

I grew up with overprotective parents who wanted to keep us from sullying our minds with secular music. I listened to a lot of Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith when I was growing up, and was SO SAD when Amy put out a secular record. SO SAD.

Then, I discovered real music, and I have never looked back. There was a time I felt betrayed, because so many Christians think that "good" music just doesn't have anything objectionable in it, and mentions Jesus every so often. :ohno: The standards are all wrong.

The other thing I found objectionable (which was true 10-15 years ago) was how obsessively Christian bands tried to mimic the sound of popular secular bands. I went to a Protestant church once that had a poster up listing a bunch of secular bands, and then corresponding Christian bands. Whatever.

There are a handful of Christian bands/singers I listen to now. I've liked a couple of Mat Kearney's songs, for example. And I have a few older songs on my ipod as well. I listen to them when I am feeling nostalgic.

But by and large, I find Christian songs sappy and vapid. Many P&W songs are so saccharine they make me want to vomit. Someone gave us a Christian lullaby CD for JT's baptism, and I listened to it once. I can't bring myself to throw it away right away, but it is sooooo sappy. I feel like I'd be doing my child a disservice.

I like how a lot of Johnny Cash songs (or songs he covers)have Christian themes, without coming off as fake, forced, or preachy. I think that's how "Christian music" should be, where the musician's faith works its way into the music naturally, rather than being forced or "tacked-on."

I got some good laughs from my wife's old Stryper CD from the '80s which I found lying around.
Guess they were trying to be the godly answer to Motley Crue or something.
I actually had more fun with the band photos on the booklet - four girly-men in glam make-up, tight black-and-yellow leather, and about ten tons of hairspray.
The music was mostly sort of p&w with pop-metal guitar licks thrown in and that effeminately-high hair-band vocal style popular back in the day.

(Incidentally, I wonder how many times they had to explain that they're not pronounced "Stripper.")

Never got into Stryper, although I had friends that did. Incidentally my first live concert was a Christian concert (Carmen, anyone?). Now I laugh, but back then I was so earnest about it ...

I agree about preferring music that is a real reflection of an artist's experience, rather than a fakey sappy forced faith. One of my all-time favorite videos is Cash's cover of "Hurt." It is, I think, a poignant and beautiful work of art.

I have really enjoyed all the "American" releases. Some of the best music ever recorded, in my book.

That's the difference between legit Gospel music (by which Johnny Cash was definitely hugely influenced) and modern 'Christian rock', IMO. Old-school Gospel is genuine.

I agree. Cash has done some good gospel stuff. (Should check out the original "American Recordings" CD).

Also on his Unearthed box set, the fifth disc is entirely old-time Gospel.

in my not-humble-at-all-opinion it is stupid to dismiss an entire genre based off of some bands you hear. Most Christian Rock bands would not agree with me, but there are some that are good in my not at all humble opinion.

Fun fact: Whenever this thread appears as the most recent on the main forum page, the thread title gets shortened to "Does Anyone Not Like Christ....". It's a *bit* startling.
