He had fantasies of being a rich man, but it was to make his family more comfortable, and it's clear from the play/movie that he was not materialistic. Tevye was a good man who sometimes wished he wasn't so poor.

Tridenteen
JMJ Gentleman. Huh. It seems that there are two extremes, total pig and way beyond chivalrous. Sort of on one hand, the kid who dumped his coffee, and let the pregnant mom mop it up while he watched her and giggled...and the kid who overbearingly opens the door, and condesendingly offers to take your box of holy cards to your pew for you, whereas the day before he stared blankly at the pile of chairs needing to be taken downstairs. But, thre are times, when I am carrying something very heavy, and a young man will rush to grab the closing door , and while holding it open say "Gee, that looks heavy, can I grab that or your purse for you?" That is a gentleman...I think Edited July 6, 2010 by Tridenteen
ThePenciledOne
I think being a true Man should be the definition of being a gentlemen, but then I am wishing. I will be back to read the original post.

The gentleman always assists such as these.
Totally. I was thinking of my perspective while writing. But you are correct. Thank you for clarifying. Gentlemanliness is something you know when you see it and is definitely the mean between the two extremes, you listed, which is appropriate to the individuals and their circumstances. Being a gentleman is much tougher to describe in a comprehensive manner or to narrow down in writings. In that way it is like some of the great virtues that are so grand and large it is difficult about what they are exactly in their fullness. It is easy to describe facets or parts of them but hard to describe them all, though it is easy to see them when they are there since they permeate so much of one's life.
