This is a religious forum and people are posting about this? This is occult. Hello??

[i]Pope Benedict XVI has condemned the Harry Potter books as "subtle seductions," capable of corrupting young Christians, in two letters which have now been published online.

There have been Vatican letters on both sides of the issue. Harry Potter is as much about the occult as Lord of the Rings or the Wizard of Oz is.

Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia have been praised as Christian, even Catholic. Harry Potter is witchcraft all over the place.

I personally don't much care for the dark involvement like that, the heavy fantasy nor the inhuman creatures. It certainly reflects the horror of sin and evil.

Harry Potter's main theme is that we all have a choice. We can choose the easy, popular path, or we can choose the hard, but right path. Had you read the books, you'd know that. Sin and evil are all around us. Always have been. The important thing is in how we choose to deal with evil. I think it is better for me to worry about the evil I see outside my window.

[sub]"I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.
"But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!"
Luke 12:4[/sub]

We need a little Father Corapi around these parts, heh.

I must say I highly disagree with the pro-Potter arguments which say it is no different from LOTR or Narnia etc. I do think there are some bothersome things in it (that have nothing to do with the use of magic itself). Some things are black and some are white, all good or all bad. Other things are grey, having good in them and bad in them, and I don't think one should ignore everything that is good about something just because it has evil in it, and at the same time I don't think someone should ignore things that could be problematic just because it had a lot of good (or at the least mostly neutral).

Overall the problems I think have been greatly exaggerated (though some do exist like in practically all entertainment today), and I will probably be going to see it when it comes out.

I agree with 90% of what you've said. I also have some problems with some of the characters, but I generally find it very entertaining. I just have problems with anyone being critical of something they haven't read. It's one of the reasons why I read things like the Da Vinci Code. I've got no right to complain about how an author portrays something if I've never cracked it open.

I agree, and I have read the series (and all of Dan Brown too actually, not particularly good writing but for some reason its addicting to me). I do think there are some things that are worth being bothered by, but nothing that makes it unreadable. I wasn't disagreeing with you, just pointing out that just because a particular fantasy story is not through and through evil, doesn't automatically make it as morally good as Tolkien or CS Lewis. On the other hand, just because it doesn't contain the same strength or level of spirituality as Tolkien or Lewis doesn't mean its automatically evil.

I was basically just saying that no its not necessarily evil, but I don't think its fair to compare it to some of the other great stories of the genre, especially if the only reason for doing so is to try and vindicate it, because it can be justified on its own without going that extra step.

The Church has not condemned Harry Potter. Some have given opinions, both negative and positive. But nothing that is binding on Catholics.

You are welcome to your opinion on this matter, but so are the rest of us. It's perfectly reasonable for members here to post about it.

Very much agree.

Doubt I'll see HP in the cinema, but I definitely want to see it.
